d'angelo's band sounds the same as prince's lovesexy sign o the times band

i was listening to d'angelo live at brixton academy 18 minute long funk jam.
i have noticed ,
that his band sounds the same as prince's band
from 1987-1988.
d'angelo incorporates housequake in his jam,
he stops his bAnd on the one after
that he said :i have the funkiest band on the earth(prince used to say that often.)

yep, that's true. dangelo's voodoo tour also borrowed heavily from the parade tour.

You mean steal, and not a very good Prince impression. I walked out on his show a few years ago. Amateurish showmanship, insincere, zero personality, and people with sub-par chops...

dude is wack, I don't think they suceeded in there blatant rip off.

Just remember that a lot of people boooed Prince in his early days too. A lot of people talked about how Prince had weak showmanship and tried to "steal" from Mick Jagger's stage presence, James Brown etc. etc. The younger generation has to start somewhere. At least people like D'Angelo are trying to keep it real on the neo-soul front.

It takes years and years to develop the kind of stage presence that Prince has... and on top of that, Prince has a gift from God to do what he does. So really I wouldn't expect D'Angelo or anyone else from the younger generation to be able to compare to Prince. That's one of the reasons why Prince is doing the Musicology tour. The tour is as much for the fans as it is for other musicians.

Well 1st you have to remember D is a very big Prince fan. He has admitted that. Just like Prince has admitted he was a big James Brown fan. ?uestlove is an admitted huge Prince fan. They have reported of watching several hours of Prince shows on tape as well as other great performers. So D's show by this generations standards was tight. It was very Parade-ish. That was the effect he wanted. Who else right now gives a show that could challenge him except 4 the gentlemen who's name is on the site we're on?

They must have been something right to 1) get an invite to Paisley Park when they came through Mpls. and 2) have the Bobby Z,Eric leeds and others of Mpls finest come 2 the show tell them the torch is theirs now....it's their turn to run with it.

No sure what thats supposed to mean...seems like your trying to hit me with some backhanded dis. I saw your favs as well: I like alot of the same artists, but unlike you I have much more variety. So your one of those one type of music people....thats cool, your out of line to dis some of the artists I like-when obviously your palette looks a dull and of one vibe.

So, say what you want...you just look typical.

I don't like D'Angelo (dude is weak) and your saying cuz I like the Velvet Underground (or whomever) that I won't appreciate D'angelo...thats a little shallow dude. Whatever, enjoy your little close knit world.

No not a diss at all. I'm just more into soul music, perhaps. I like plenty of other genres of music but soul is my favorite. It was just an observation...no need to get your panties in a bunch biggrin

For someone whose palette is so full of variety I don't know what that "you just look typical" shit is about? confuse

I was there that night and it was more than just the sound. He was dancing very similar to Prince and did a lot of the hand movements similar to used in the '86 parade gigs.

Great show though - reminded me of early Prince gigs. Shame that D's lost it of late.

typical...very rarely does anyone outside of the neo-soul listening genre care or is interested in D'Angelo. Cuz he's kinda generic, seems like people "into" other genres of music think he's pretty irrelevent. I work in the music industry, and most of my peers see him as kind of a boring soul singer then an artistic trailblazer. Sure Prince lifted & was obviously inspired by James...but he put his own spin on it. It was rock, it was theatrical like Bowie, much more titilating. What was D'Angelo's take on the whole funky R&B soul front man (James) well; it was boring, he acted "street" (whatever that floating abstraction means) & had a soft band. So I don't know....He's just kind of generic, unless you follow that specific genre, and I really don't subscribe to that train of thought. He's just not special.

Because you "work" in the industry and your friends think he's boring then he's nothing special huh? rolleyes Screw what folks like Prince, Eric Clapton and Beck think. Whether or not you find him entertaining isn't really the issue. It baffles me how a struggling artist like yourself can just easily shit on one that's 1 gold album, 1 platinum album and 2 world tours ahead of you. I'm not the one living in a close knit world. Let's just hope Barbara Steele takes the world by storm and every household on earth owns a copy. Your argument would probably hold more weight if you just said "I don't like neo-soul"

I'd never say anything like "I don't like Neo-Soul..." due to the fact I dig or don't dig music based on the artistry of it. i'd never not like something because its classified to the public (or artist) as a certain type of thing. As far as comparing my band success to D'Angelo: well, I'll never have gold/platinum records & that is not a meter of respect in my book, so I don't see anything wrong with not giving someone props-If I just plain don't like it. I play different music in a whole different world, to different people, in different places, for different reasons...and I'm hardly struggling. But thanks for your hope...but its all good. Oh yeah & your "work" in quotations-I don't if that was some sort of diss. But I work for a Music Company (distributor/label/vendor) as well as have my super tiny label.

"I just don't like him" / "He's just not special" = dislike
"I walked out on his show a few years ago. Amateurish showmanship, insincere, zero personality, and people with sub-par chops..." = shitting

But whatever... I don't get paid to endorse D'Angelo or anyone else for that matter so I'm done with it. More power and luck to you and Barbara Steele.

prince performed great liveshows back in the day (he still does btw). these performances witnessed prince mimicing (yes, mimicing) the likes of jimi hendrix, james brown and little richard. regardless of that fact these shows were still fire. d'angelo does the exact same thing. he encorporates trademark characteristics of his heroes in music. these heroes are a.o. al green, george clinton, james brown and last, but certainly not least, prince. what's wrong with that?

Whatever you think of D'Angelo, and I happen to think he's pretty good, you have to give him some credit for the painstaking effort he puts into his harmonies.

The vocal layering on Voodoo is exquisite. You can say Stevie and Marvin did it before him, and I'm not going to argue that D'Angelo is better in this field, but nobody, even these two mentioned here, took the concept as far as D'Angelo did on Voodoo.

Some may feel it's too dense, but the last thing it could be called is 'typical'. There's no-one out there doing it like on Voodoo.

What's D'Angelo up to these days by the way? Is he taking another MJ-esque number of years to complete his next album?

I think it depends on what you listen to. Prince fans will say Prince, P-Funk fans will say Parliament, Tower of Power fans will say T.O.P. A lot of creating the type of show that D does is formula. You borrow from like artists, and add your own twist - like Prince does. D's show was tight; regardless of what anyone thinks of him.

everyone moaning that dangelo stole everything he knows from prince obviously has a meagre knowledge of soul or funk. yes, some of that 2000 tour was reminiscent of the parade tour and SOTT tour but if you listen to some old james brown bootlegs, you can that prince was as influenced by JB as dangelo was by prince. and dangelo is a soul artist, prince is not. thats the difference.

They don't respect soul around here on Prince.org. They think Prince is above the entire SOUL genre, therefore D'Angelo has to be beneath Prince. Ingorant mutha fu...s. Really, I think too soulful=too black, but I digress. D does his thang. He ain't Prince, nor is he trying to be. He just borrows from others and spins it into his own thing like Prince does. He just does it within the context of SOUL music.
