How do you understand this Prince quote? "People wanna live through you and if you do something they don´t expect, than you are the bad one."
What do you make out of these words and would you agree? "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I think he's absolutely right. This quote is a testament to his life and his career. He's probably the ONLY artist that I've come across who is placed under such high expectations...and maybe that's because he is such a musical genius that people only expect greatness...not mediocrity, not banality. I also think that P is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. He's one of these artists who is VERY polarizing. If he doesn't play like he used to, he's "lost it." But if he DOES play like he used to, it's like "ugghhhh...we already used this shit before; it's not innovative or inspiring!" It's like what Eric Clapton once said of P: "either you love him or you hate him." I think that's very true. P is a very divisive and polarizing musical figure...but so were the other geniuses that came before him: Miles and Mozart!
So, I just feel that with Prince, no one is ever going to be completely satisfied. Who can blame Prince for just saying "fuck it" and doing what makes him happy? Seriously, who can blame him? Bottom line: My father always told me to just do what I want and what pleases me because you can't please everyone and people will NEVER be satisfied with what you do. I certainly feel that way about P. I think it's sad. Really sad...

Would you also say that this quote applies also to people´s personal lives. I mean that a lot of people don´t know what to do with their own lives and are trying to run away from their boredom in thoughts by thinking too much about others - especially their idols in general... "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

It's a quote about living vicariously through other people.
A classic example of this is the cult of 'celebrity'. We wish we could live the lives of some celebrities but can't, so we follow their exploits avidly. Then when they do something perceived as wrong, we get angry and disappointed with them - even though realistically they don't have anything to do with us.

Would you say to be a contented Prince fan, is to expect banality and mediocrity, rather than genius and greatness? Or, just not expect anything (which is tantamount to having no opinion at all IMO). // [This message was edited Sat May 8 11:59:35 2004 by NouveauDance]

It´s from the interview he did with Melanie B. in Paislay park (the only one I´ve ever seen BTW). It´s at the end when she´s ready to leave. P tells her that she ain´t so scarry, that he doesn´t understand why people call her that and she said that she has her own opinions and that´s probably scarry for some people and he replied with this. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

No. People wanna Live Through You? People wanna EmUlate him? Maybe some do. He does something Akin to Their Expectations and his is Wrong? No way! Theyare Stupid to Force Him to Live Their Way or to Their Expectations. I do Not Think He is Wrong.I do not Think he was ever Wrong. I do Believe he has been TERRIBLY MISCONSTRUED over the Years by Fans,PublicandIndustry folk. He is Prince. He is an Artist who Creates. He Must Live it as His Vision. It is His Career and his Life. Whereas some found his Ways ODD or STRANGE others like Myself quite Understood and Embraced. I Always Enjoyed his Different Way of Doing Things. It was and is quite Fun and how can Anyone Say what his NORM should be? I as I have said will ALWAYS LOVE Him and I Know I Place such a HIGH POSITION for Him and He Thinks DAG I CANNOT Ever Be That Or LIVE UP to That but Listen..He Already Has...He Prince has made me so Very Happy over the Years .. He doesn't Have to do Anything More. He will ALWAYS be the One. He is Just well I Just Adore him. It is all for the Music that he Creates and of Course because well I Find Him sooo INCREDIBLY SEXY ..I will ALWAYS so Really he just Doesn't have to Try that Hard for ZELAIRA to COMe for Him.. I Just well have Always been Enraptured by Him....He is Heaven on Earth ...I Enjoy seeing him Sooo Very Much. I am Just so Pleased to be able to Enjoy his Journey of Music .. I am Just so Happy to be able to EXPERIENCE his Trip into such a Wonderful Place of Pleasure. I what can I say ??? I just well Prince he just Sends me...He takes me THERE!!! I Love Him...

when i first heard him say this i immediately thought he was referring to the people that were around him everyday his entourage the people who work for him
i think people who work for big stars do sometimes live through them by hanging on there every whim i gather prince was hinting that these people should have other things in there lives besides him
