28 Prince albums

i counted 28 Prince solo albums including The Truth, Expectation, ONA Piano and the two new collections on the club of old NPGMC songs. i didn't bother with the hits collection or The Vault or Crystal Ball since they were already old material. and i didn't count the New Power Generation albums.

is that right? if so then just that alone would be a lot of music.

And this brings up a question that I posted here once and it was somehow lost in the shuffle.

Has anyone in the history of recorded music released as much original material as P?

Can someone post or direct me to a full chronological list of Prince albums. There used to be one at Guide2Prince.org and at a Data Transcription Team website ... both those sites have closed.

Why not? The material on both releases were previously unreleased, right? I definitely count Crystal Ball because it included The Truth(which you listed).

I am shocked. I love James Brown, but I have his 10 greatest hits on a CD and I can't imagine needing more of his tracks. How can he have 250+ songs released like P has?!??!

Ok here is the JB discography...

60's http://www.funky-stuff.co...isco60.htm
70's http://www.funky-stuff.co...isco70.htm
80's http://www.funky-stuff.co...isco80.htm
90's and beyond http://www.funky-stuff.co...isco90.htm

The first thing I noticed is that a lot albums are live shows and not original material.

Can someone post all of the "other" officially released albums of original material but not put out under his name...that he did "the majority/all" of the work? I can start with what I know...

I atleast consider these to be his as well. As he had so much output that they spilled over unto these albums...

Vanity 6
Apollonia 6
The Time
The TIme - What Time is it?
The TIme - Ice Cream Castles
The Time - Pandemonium
Shelia E - Glamorous Life
Shelia E - In Romance 1600
Shelia E - Shelia E
Jill Jones

Christian Zombie Vampires

I included the 'download only' albums because they were sequenced as 'albums' by Prince
himself, and it's very likely that they will eventually get a proper CD release.

U didnt include C-NOTE if u r judging everything he released.
Also, The Choc Invasion and Slaughter are not technically albums, otherwise u should include NPGMC YR 1 IN THAT.
Albums should mean all the publicly released stuff, so that would take off Xpectation and CNOTE and should include The Hits series.

James Brown. Easily.

Miles
Coltrane
Monk
Mingus
Ellington
James

to name a few. but few of P's contemporaries can match his productivity.

You can't buy The Truth seperately, so it doesn't count as a seperate album
(otherwise you'd have to treat It Ain't Over as a seperate album too)
And Newpower Soul is an NPG album (otherwise you'd have to include
Goldnigga and Exodus too)

And I must admit I was in two minds whether to include the download only
albums, but decided to include them because it's very very likely that they
will get a CD release at some point.

I believe Jandek has released about 40 albums of original material since 78 or so. Mind you, every album sounds exactly the same, and they're all pretty much worthless musically, but from a perspective of volume, he's probably out-done Prince.

See, this is exactly why we can never get an "official", exact count. What constitutes a Prince album is a very subjective thing...I would count Xpectation, because I consider it to be a fully realized piece of music made up of a collection of songs, and it was made officially available by Prince's website on two separate occasions. But if I count THAT, should I then count the Madhouse albums? They seem to have been the same kind of projects, right? And if I count Madhouse, shouldn't I count NewPowerSoul? After all, the album is a Prince album in everything but name. And if we go there, then shouldn't we just let Goldnigga and Exodus slide through the velvet rope too? "SURE", you say? Okay, then we should consider Jill Jones' album a Prince album, because most all of the songs on there are some of the finest songs Prince never officially released on his lonesome (except of course for "With You"), and so okay then, what about all those Time albums and Vanity 6 songs and The Family and, oh oh oh, I just don't want to talk about it anymore because my head hurts now. redface
