Next single idea (and no, it's not a mil. days) Ok, school's really in P. You listening?
What Do U Want Me 2 Do? Clearly, the most "classic" sounding Prince song on the whole album, the Linn drum, the vulnerability mixed with the badass confidence, plus, a great melody. It's all there...except? First off, a slight Timba-fication of the beat. Get Timbaland to beef up the bass, strip down the flourishes, simplify it so it has that more modern dynamic to it. And then, of course, Missy. How great would she be as answer to his question? It would alternately provide a nice counterpoint to the whole "get beheaded" "someone gonna get her" stuff, and get it on the radio. Plus, how great would it be to hear her make some reference 'bout the same diet Missy went on? I'm telling you. It's gold. And I'm sure it wouldn't flop like that Janet/Missy remix

Sorry no deal!!! agreed. this song is a work of art as it is. Timbaland would overproduce the fuck out of it and we'd be left with something akin to Undisputed or some Rave-sounding shit. The current beat is carefully programmed.....timbaland would just put a repetitious syncopated club beat in and SQUEEZE all the soul out of it. . It would be great to see some Prince songs get remix versions from some of the top producers in the country..and this certainly would be a good one!! "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

no. no it wouldn't. check the neptunes remix of the greatest romance. it's much, much worse than the original. don't fiddle with "what do u want me 2 do"....unless it's PRINCE doing the fiddling, I think most of us will hate the results and it certainly will never make Prince any more popular in general.

You're all out of your minds! First off, Timbaland is not the Neptunes. He and Missy are pushing pop music to its next levels...the same way P did years back. The Neptunes are a cute novelty act that no one will remember a few years from now. Second, P has started a dialogue with them on this record, between the Missy diet reference and the "Life of the Party" beat (which is a straight Timbaland throwdown) to the whole of Illusion, Pimp, Coma. Why not follow it through to its logical conclusion, stop being so damn parochial!

I never said they were. I respect Timbaland, Missy AND the Neptunes, btw. They've all done some good work. But it will not work for "What Do U Want Me 2 Do". I could see the vocal track being taken from "If Eye Was the Man In Ur Life" and put to a timbaland backdrop, but "WDUWM2D" is just too classy and PRINCEISH to be messed with. Sorry, but I think it's a really bad idea. "Life O the Party" would be much better with the treatment you're suggesting - "WDUWM2D" is just too sweet and nice and PERFECT already. Doesn't need it. And who you calling parochial, buddy? I'm very open for experimentation musically, I just don't think this would work for THIS PARTICULAR SONG. . Heck, he used Beyonce to cater to the younger ones, why not them? GeSmi1 Baby, Baby, Baby...what's it going 2 b?

What u want me 2 do...don't mess w/it. Think he could release that for the R&B market cuz it's definitely a "cha-cha" song. Anyone who knows Rick James' "Mary Jane" knows what I mean. Heard the house remix of Gett Off today and remembered how much I love that. From a pure monetary point of view, I say let whoever mix whatever cuz bootleggers have been mixing and remixing P's music for years and he hasn't gotten paid in $$ for them. And it will show how ahead of his time he was. I swear I hear Prince licks everyday just like in the 80s.

Heck, he used Beyonce to cater to the younger ones, why not them? GeSmi1 As freaky as Prince is/was, he ain't tryin' to pee on nobody...tho he and R. share the affinity for youngsters (and look who knew how to work it, huh)...and the phrasing of Feelin' On Yo Booty at the end is vintage Prince (your boo-hoo- tee...kinda like Tambourine). And quit hatin on Beyonce yall...she's got a great voice, she's not an overnight success (she's been doin' it a long time) and she was humble. Plus, the shape of her body has given hope to many, many girls and women who have been told for decades by the Fashionistas that they were too "fat". When they weren't: they have pear bodies: big butt, hips and thighs. And men LOVE that. So to see this on a superstar sends a powerful message. Plus, I must realize that, from the late 80s on, Prince had women who could sing in his band who weren't toothpicks. If that's where people are coming from, then I really applaud Prince for making that change. Cuz Vanity couldn't sing, and Apollonia made Vanity sound like Pavarotti. Sheila E's vocal chops aren't much better but she's a musician so she understands basic things about the voice. Plus, she's Sheila E!!!! Inspiration for drummers (jazz, rock, r&B, otherwise, both sexes) everywhere. I still have her performance from the American Music Awards. So, who should he hook up with? Crystal Method (I see them redoing America)...the Philly crew responsible for The Roots, Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton could TRY "What U Want Me To Do" but honestly that song is perfect as it is. SOMEBODY should release the "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" performance as is on disc. Anda quite delicious thought of Prince and Bounty Killa through their association with No Doubt ...Prince definitely has a song w/Bounty's name on it somewhere...and No Doubt's song showed that it doesn't have to be overpowering. A Million Days just may be the next single...it's very soothing and can be played on the Adult Contemporary stations too. What U Want...is great for adult urban, as is On the Couch (I can see Steve Harvey now)...mr. man without the don't vote line is good for all. With all the turmoil in Iraq, I'd like to see Cinnamon (sp?) Girl. Especially cuz I already heard a punk luminary play it on his radio show. The song is extremely timely, moreso because of the recent abuses...and if released now, could probably be milked until election day...depending on what Sony wants to do.

[This message was edited Thu May 6 21:39:36 2004 by mrdespues] I should've put in a winky thing...wasn't really directed at you as much as all you crazy fools who aren't feeling this idea there, all better? I sometime just think Prince does get a little lost in his own head, which is often a lovely place to be, but I do wish he open that door a little more. Yeah, the Rave stuff stunk, as have most remixes of his stuff, but that doesn't mean someone couldn't get it right. I bet T&M could.

Even though I'm not a fan of that "not voting" line, that would straight suck if Prince editied out a controversial opinion in a song just to get airplay. . [This message was edited Fri May 7 8:23:26 2004 by Universaluv]
