What's up with this recurring lyric?

Is there a kind of progression in the way that it's used? In Irresistable Bitch, it seems to be kind of kinky, perhaps suggesting a S&M kind of physical hurt but more indicative of knowing a relationship is painful but coming back for more. Definitely very psycho-sexual.

In the other two songs, I think more so in MNIP than Thieves, there's a feeling of being put upon by the media and such. In Thieves it has more to do with this kind of turning-the-other-cheek to the venal jerks who he's contending with. In MNIP, it's almost a bad-ass declaration of "I can take it! Go ahead!" He was kind of sensitive about album reviews and such at that time.

Also, I think the phrase "Hurt me!" in all cases is there for its shock value, it has an emotionally percussive kind of effect that doesn't necessarily represent anything specific.

What do you all think?

I think it is a verbal request in which Prince is asking someone to do some kind of harm to him.

How about ?? Why Ya Wanna Treat Me So Bad? Something In The Water and Automatic? He has been Abused Emotionally by Women?

Call me crazy, but I thought this was an interesting topic! I was looking forward to hearing some folks', y'know, opinions on the subject.

It's nothing overly violent. When Prince says, "hurt me" he means a small pinch or a nibble on his eye.
