Yeah, the whole "Revolution" period was a great time for b-sides and extended versions.

Erotic City (Make Love Not War, Erotic City Come Alive)
God
God (Instrumental: Love Theme From Purple Rain)
I Would Die 4 U (Extended Version)
Another Lonely Christmas (Extended Version)

AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY:
Raspberry Beret (Extended Version)
She's Always In My Hair (Extended Version)
Paisley Park (Remix)
Pop Life (Extended Version)
Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix)
Hello (Extended Version)
America (Extended Version)
Girl (Extended Version)

PARADE:
Kiss (Extended Version)

i just noticed...for the first time...that my uk 12 inch of paisley park hs the labels on backwards. side A is supposed to be paisley park/she's always in my hair and side B is supposed to be paisley park (remix). well, the label says paisley park (remix) but it's actually the reverse. hmmm....

Most of the UK pressings of Paisley Park were mis-pressed with 4 tracks instead of 3
The cover and labels say it should contain...

Side 1:
Paisley Park
She's Always In My Hair

Side 2:
Paisley Park (Remix)

But most of them are actually pressed up as...

Side 1:
Paisley Park
She's Always In My Hair

Side 2:
She's Always In My Hair
Paisley Park (Remix)

(strange)

You can find most of this stuff on ebay if you look hard enough and it doesn't cost too much.

It's only the rare stuff you have to pay big bucks for.

"I love u in me"- Beutiful sunding, amazinly honest lyrics 4 a bloke! I love this song! Possibally one of the bravest songs ever! (From a male point of view)
"Scandalous ses suite etc"- Yeah,"Sex" and "Get off" are funky too

I agree as a whole, the 'Around The World In A Day' period comes out on top, but I hated Sheila E's "Pop Life" remix on the U.S. 12". I was very happy to find the normal extended version on the import. It's so much better. And the guitar solo on the 22 minute version of "America" is smokin'!

Batdance (Vicki Vale Mix)
200 Balloons
Partyman (Video Mix)
Partyman (Purple Party Mix)
Partyman (Partyman Music Mix)
Feel U Up (Long Stroke)
I Love U In Me
The Scandalous Sex Suite:
(The Crime / The Passion / The Rapture)
Sex
The Future (Remix)
Electric Chair (Remix)

I hated Sheila E.'s remix of Pop Life as well. Thought it was so unncessary, given that the extended version was so good.

I'm just hearing a lot of the 12" stuff for the first time and I would agree that the ATWIAD period has some very strong extended versions. I particularly like the extended Girl, not a song that really struck a chord with me on the B-Sides disc, but I've been listening to the 12" version over and over recently.

dancing jig oh maaan there was nothin like gettin the new Prince 12"
when it came out woot!
i am with you, ATWIAD/Parade are my fav 12 inches/b-sides!
The Batman 12 inches were cool too nod The Batmix totally rocks!

And although maybe not "the best" era for 12 inches/b-sides, SOTT had
La La La He He Hee (highly explosive)
Shockadelica (extended version)
Housequake (7 minutes MoQuake)
Hot Thing (remix) & (dub mix)
U Got The Look (long look)

not too shabby thumbs up!

I'm with you Sassy....Around the World In A Day.

I mean, how can you fuck with the long version of Paisley Park, all moaning, soaring guitars and the sound of dolphins fucking? Ya CAIN'T.

Okay, maybe I think that Parade's got the best 12 inchers...Mountains is my all-time favorite extended song...that keyboard jam at the end - ba-BAAAAA-ba, ba-BAAAA-ba-ba - that's imprinted in my soul.

Kiss is another amazing 12 inch. "SAUL!!! I TOLDJA NOT TO CHANGE THAT CHANNEL!"

I'm not sure if Love or Money counts, but damn I love that song.

Revolution, put the groove on the bus!
Outta town, lawd, don't worry 'bout us!
Gimme that, gimme that vaseline
Gotta slide, the girls know what I mean,

UNGH

Those little sexy grunts in that song after he sings "the girls know what I mean" sound like Dave Chappelle when Charlie Murphy makes the shirts vs. the blouses comment.....ungh...

85-86, in my opinion absolutely can not be touched and will not ever be touched in terms of greatness - not by Prince or anybody else. That's just the way it is, y'all. Heh, IMO.

Pagey

From 1999 to lovesexy I remember getting all excited when a single was released so I could hear the bside. I usually liked the bside more than the aside. Then there were those singles that both songs were phenominal. Lets go Crazy b/w Erotic City, Raspberry Beret b/w She's Always In My Hair, WDC b/w 17 Days, 1999 b/w How Come U Don't Call, I wish U Heaven b/w Scarlett Pussy.

I have to say Prince's very first 12" of "Let's Work" and b-side "Gotta Stop Messin About" is killer. The 12" of "Little Red Corvette" is classic. All of Purple Rain's 12" and b-sides are great. I've said before on one of my threads that "She's Always In My Hair" is his best b-side of all time, to me. I also like the "Sign Of The Times" era as well. "Shockadelica" long version is a close second. The guitar on that sounds wicked. The tone, his attitude in his vocals towards the end, the Sly Stone bit, yeah. But ATWIAD had "Hello" and "Paisley Park" with the Beatles "Revolution" guitar licks in the guitar intro. The boy is bad.

yeah! Overall, the best era. And suprisingly, on the back of he busiest year. The Pop Life UK 12" version is the ultimate 12"/extended version, whether you like the song or not. This should be the aim of ALL extended versions. New verses, treble the length. oh yes.

I think the best mixes / B-Sides period was Purple Rain.

I think 'Girl' and 'Hello' are good, but maybe a bit flimsy musically and lyrically. 'She's Always In My Hair' is brilliant though.

However, how could those B-Sides compare with:

17 Days
Erotic City
Another Lonely X-Mas
God

Together, they sound like the first side of another album!

eleven is also correct in saying that the best extended remix is Eye Wish U Heaven Parts 1.2.3. It really did take the song someplace else instead of just padding it out.
