I've had this question for a long time.
In some sources (most) the "1999" Album followed "Controversy".
But on the back insert of my Controversy CD there's reference about the 1999 CD ("his smash 1999 CD where he arranged, composed, played...)
So?
What's official???

I don't remember what particular order the CDs were released in back in the 80's when they first came out, but the official chronological order is "Controversy" (1981) then "1999" (1982).

So those "notes" were written, to hype the older CDs to sell better. The "Controversy" CD was probably released in the late 80's, or at least after 1985 and the public was pretty much aware of the success of "1999". I think Warner Bros. was trying to push his back catalog based on that success.

Controversy came first. It was released 14th October 1981
1999 was released 27th October 1982.
CDs weren't invented back then.
Prince's albums didn't appear on CD until around 1987.

Around the World in a Day wasn't on CD in '85? I could've sworn I used to marvel at how they could fit all 12 inches of music into that longbox.

Newbies scare me.

It seems that those kind of liner notes were all over the place. Normally they described pretty much all of the artists work that was out at the time of the ISSUE.

Depece Mode had them, just got Glamorous Life and it's there as well.

yes - ATWIAD was on CD in '85...it had special packaging with a slipcover for the cd that fit inside a slot in the middle of a tri-fold sleeve that doubled as a longbox. i remember billboard magazine had an article about the packaging when the album came out, and how it was kind of a big deal that prince was eschewing the standard jewel box, cuz nobody else was getting fancy with cd packaging at the time.

oh, and i have a copy of ATWIAD in the schmancy packaging if yez need proof!

I think 1999 was the first Prince album on CD, was it not? (Missing "D.M.S.R." at the time). That or else it was released around the same time as the Purple Rain CD. All others came later.
