prince's cover of hendrix' red house is a dissapointment

i was really looking forward to hearing it, i thought prince would do it justice, maybe do it raw and spare like the undertaker sessions, but from the snippet i heard, this is no better than half the other listenable but ultimately horribly dull and banal modern blues thats out there.

with guys like jack white updating blues-rock from a fresh perspective or otis taylor doing interesting, fresh, rootsier things with the genre, you might think prince would try and show what he can do as well but all he did was make the song sound like robert cray doing some sort of sterile R&B cover of a hendrix classic. lol@everyone that used to say prince was an heir to hendrix' throne - this does nothing to make a good case for that supposition.

true. but he's had some decent ones, like one of us. that was brilliant. but yeah, for the most part, prince is a pretty bad covers artist.

didn't you know? These music "experts" (ie "snobs) can tell whether a song is going to be good by just a 30 second SNIPPET...they're THAT GOOD...not rolleyes

well folks, I guess we'd better brace ourselves for the next few days....Prince is about to get slammed by Hendrix snobs...sigh rolleyes

1. Prince is no Hendrix.
2. "doing cover songs ain't his forté as it is" - Agreed. /his best guitar work is within the context of his own work. I thought a lot less of "Just My Imagination" than many on this site did. Prince works best on Prince songs.

I suspect it's possible to listen to a 30 second snippet of many classic songs / acclaimed recordings and mistakenly conclude that the performace is average / disappointing if you haven't hrard the whole thing

The top left hand corner of the 'Mona Lisa' is pretty ordinary if you're acquainted with Da Vinci's art, but you haven't seen the full work.

I heard Hendrix on a live at Berkely album, and believe me, Prince is good, but at his best Hendrix was God. His solo on Stone Free nailed my heart to a rainbow.
