2 versions of Old Friends for Sale

Anybody else think the newer version of Old Friends for Sale that was on The Vault was inferior to the original? The original had such a cool feel with great lyrics. It's like he forgot what good lyrics were and decided to hijack that track. I don't like the horn parts on the new one either. Wonder why he screwed with it.

the first one is definately the better version....

I heard he changed the lyrics because they were too personal....

nod

Can be a dissappointment when you think a great track gets a proper release and it turns out to be 'slightly' inferior...Had the same with Joy in Repetition and We can funk...

I heard some lyrics in the older one were supposedly about Morris.

As far as We Can Funk and Joy In Rep. I can't say for the original Joy because I never

heard it but the original WE CAN FUNK is much better. It looks like the one on Graffiti

Bridge has some of the life sucked out for some reason. Does anyone know the original

time period he recorded the first one in?

I love both versions of "Old Friends 4 Sale". The original has great lyrics and is very atmospheric, however I love the horns on the latter version.

I just wish I had an official copy of the original. Does anybody think it'll ever see the light of day?

aren't there 3, actually?

the original, stripped down one with the original lyrics. a second one from 85/86 with the same lyrics, but with the horns, etc. and then the third one from 91 with the horns, but different lyrics?

perhaps i'm misremembering, but i think there are 3.

We Can Funk on Graffiti Bridge actually uses the basic tracks recorded in 1983 (and so Wendy & Lisa can still be heard in the background). The 1986 version was recorded live with the full Revolution and I love it just as much as the 1990 version.

From http://www.dtt-lyrics.com...5.html#old

The sun set in the west this mornin'
4 I know, I know L.A. is callin'
Bad news, Steve said, and people are talkin'
They say your kingdom is fallin', yeah
They say U lost your fire
When another musician U hired
Little do they know, U wouldn't have passed go
Unless they could take U higher, yeah

The sun set in my heart this afternoon
4 2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow
In Uptown when winter's alarmin', oh
Cocaine becomes charmin'
But U talk about things U don't know 'bout
I know, no matter how pleasant your past was
Green and white return 2 blue
U're happy as long as your last buzz
And then U think U want something new, yeah

The sun, the sun set in my mind this evening
4 someone who said they would die 4 me
Sold some, they sold some more pictures and all my little memories
Chump change is 2 unravel the mystery, ah ha
But life is no fun, life ain't no fun without fantasy
Some things are better left unsaid
And some people are better left untrusted
Maybe, maybe, maybe it'll all make sense when I'm dead
When I'm dead

Old friends 4 sale
Get'em while the gettin' is hot
Watch out, they'll kiss U until they get what U got
And they'll show U the friends that they're not
Old friends 4 sale
Yeah, my avatar's copyrighted...but I damn sure paid 'em enough money to use it here!
