Interesting article on Prince approaching again the masses in Spanish El Pais newspaper

There is an article in El Pais today, 5/5/2004 written by Diego A. Manrique, probably the most respected Spanish music critic. Here you have the translation:

Prince returns to approach the big public with "Musicology"
Its release coincides with the 20th anniversary of "Purple Rain".

D.A.M., Madrid
The musician, singer and composer Prince reappears officialy with Musicology (Sony). Its release coincides with the 20th anniversary of Purple rain, the disc and the film that put him at the top of his popularity. In reality, it is not a return from the nowhere: even out of big media's radar, Prince has followed releasing music in its own company and performing.

Prince Rogers Nelson (Minneapolis, 1958) has opted for an unusual model of business. With no agent, he performs in USA when he wants to: he avoids the local promotors, and rents the arenas; instead of paying publicity, he lets the news to spread by "mouth to mouth". By removing intermediary guys and reducing expenses, he's comparatively earning more than superstars in tour. Sometimes, the very same night he offers a more relaxed show in a club, where he gets the money before playing a single note.
After the problematic ending of contract with Warner, Prince renegates of long term relationships with companys. The conflict derived from a radical discrepancy on the function of each part: Warner wanted to rationate his releases, in order to approach the sales of his good years, while Prince required to release anything he wanted to, ignoring the realities of the market and the suggestions from the company's guys. In these wars, the public uses to put their sympathies for the artist, but here happened a big mistake: Prince renamed himself with an unpronouncable symbol, apparently convinced that changing the name liberated him from his commitmments with Warner; the street people considered him another crazy guy, infected by the same virus as Michael Jackson.
Since 1996, Prince works freely. In New Power Generation Records releases albums available through Internet or in specific chains; out of the USA, he gives the distribution to independent companies. This way, he releases from Crystal Ball -three CD of outtakes- to NEWS, with four instrumentals. His sales are now of ten of thousands, but, of course, he's conceited of getting more money than when he sold millions of copies.
He also benefits from the big companies yearning for signing him (and reform him). He flirted with Capitol and BMG, getting very high royalties. Both enterprises ended frustrated after releasing, respectively, Emancipation and Rave un2 the joy fantastic: Prince does not accept the discipline of a marketing plan and, wow, his followers have reduced drastically.
What is known on his everyday life is complicating the situation: it is currently assured that he's now a devote Jehovah withess, renegating from the meat pleasures. However, he's not so far from the world to not appreciate that the winds are blowing in his favour: Alicia Keys, OutKast and other current stars are his declared fans. His appearance at the Grammy show, in company of the main Sony's star, Beyoncé, states he wants to give a more accesible image. Bets are accepted on the duration of his kind attitude.
