Okay let me spell it out in geeky Star Wars terms.
"Purple Rain" in 1984 was like when the 1st "Star Wars" movie came out-people had not witnessed any thing like it. It was a phenomenon. That captured the imagination of people globally. Now there have been better "Star Wars" movies than the 1st one, however the explosion of sheer awe that happened in 1977 never really hit the way the 1st movie did. Simply because it was the 1st time. There have been other albums by Prince better than "Purple Rain" , but you can never recreate the mainstreams sheer awe of Prince in 1984. Not because he hasn't done anything better since 1984. Just because it was the 1st time..... "New Power slide...." | |
