Prince does Hendrix...finally! Prince has always cited Jimi Hendrix as a major influence, so it's exciting to see that Prince has made a contribution to the latest Hendrix tribute album, "Power of Soul," in stores today. As you are all well aware, "Purple House" is Prince's obvious but aptly-retitiled cover of Jimi's "Red House."
I plan to pick it up after work today...can't wait to hear the whole thing (I've heard a snippet)...plus the disc has Chaka Kahn, Santana, and Earth, Wind & Fire on it. Prince will be pleased with his company...folks he collaborates with and name-drops on Muicology and while making the press rounds. Has anyone picked up this album yet? Does anyone know the story behind when and where Prince recorded his cover for the disc? Keith/Kacey

I got this a day early.Like alot of his cover versions it's not that great. The guitar solo is good but that's about it. I like the other cover versions by Santana,Chaka Khan,Bootsy Collins, & Lenny Kravitz better though. According to the liner notes Prince is playing guitar & Larry Graham is playing bass.Nothing saying where & when it was recorded. But if you wanna hear a Hendrix cover done by Prince right, go get the Vega Aftershow boot. His vesrion of Who Knows is fantastic..

Okay, well...I did buy the cd.
Anybody else pick it up? I actually like the cover...it will sit well next to songs like "The Ride" on a Prince Blues compilation cd I'm burning myself for hot tunes in the car! Any thoughts on "Purple House"? Keith/Kacey

Cool pic, nana...
IMO, it's a good cover, but lacks energy...definately not his best cover. Still, it's one of my favorite songs on the CD. His version blows away John Lee Hookers version of Red House. My favs: 1. Robert Randolph & The Family Band- Purple Haze 2. Bootsy Collins- Power Of Soul 3. Santana w/Corey Glover- Spanish Castle Magic 4. Prince- Purple House Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
