1999 vs. SOTT

seems on this forum SOTT gets all the credit as Princes masterpiece. it is a masterpiece, indeed.
but go back, put on your 1999 vinyl, get in the mood with the titletrack and let the futuristic, strange, poppy, funny and overall creative feling of the hole album caress you as you finally towards the end get ready for LADY CAB DRIVER, one of princes, if not the one, true classic masterpieces. the desperation in that song pretty much sums up what prince is all about and has been through his career. sexual frustration, lack of selfconfidence, true geniuos and fragility, and way to funky for most people on this planet.

to me SOTT is mastercool, with some of prince best ever songs, adore, if i was your girlfriende, the cross, but as a whole the release is incoherent. 1999 has the punch of a real fascinating sound experience, creative, desperate, funky and funny. a masterpiece.

thoughts ?

Yes, SOTT is incoherent, but with some awesome songs. I'm wondering if most people who'd choose SOTT over 1999 are doing it because of their age or when they first got into Prince? 1999 was my first Prince album, so perhaps that has made me a lil more biased to it, but nonetheless, I still feel it's a better album (as a whole) than SOTT. I skip a lot of songs on SOTT cuz I don't like the way it flows. 1999 is very cohesive -- every song belongs.

Sign o' the times is a great piece of art..but 1999 flows better in my opinion. I don't skip a thing when i'm into 1999, yet when i'm listening to SOTT i always end up skipping play in the sunshine..sounds a bit corny to me. but hey its my opinion
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

This is just my opinion:

SOTT is the masterpiece because to my ears, it set the tone for what music would sound like in the next 15 years.

When I hear contemporary R&B, especially the NEO SOUL movement, I can hear SOTT echoed throughout.

Not that 1999 was not revolutionary in the way it fused a barrage of different styles bubbling under at the time (punk, rockabilly, funk) with pop...

But I just think that SOTT had the deepest impact of any Prince album on the way music would be played in the future.

Thanks for listening.

What she said.

Since SOTT's release I've felt that 1999 was/is Prince's best multi-album set. Almost 20 years later nothing has changed my mind.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
