Musicology Production

I have listened to Musicology on different stereos now, IPOD, home, car, and I noticed that the production seems a bit noisy on the rock tunes.
The funk tunes are produced flawlessly, but A Million Days, Cinnamin Girl, The Marrying Kind, and If I Was the Man in Your Life seem almost distorted, like the levels are too high.
I don't mean distorted guitars like Nirvana; their production was actually very clean.
I noticed this on So Far So Pleased, as well.
Anyone else hear this?

I know what you mean...Especially Cinnamon Girl. The bass guitar is incredibly distorted, particularly on the chorus. Really surprising, as Prince's production is usually very clean. It is distracting...

i didn't hear this. So Far, So pleased, yes - the production is a mess. But I don't have a problem w/ the rock songs on Musicology, they sound clean to me in comparison.

Nirvana's production was clean? Cleaned up maybe. I remember how Smells Like Teen Spirit was touched up by the engineer at the request of the record company. It' funny how that song is so iconic, yet much of the guitar u hear on that record was not even played by Nirvana but added afterwards. The original track was rough and even out of tune, so the additional guitar tracks were needed to bring the overall sound back in tune and give the song more of a definite melodic theme.

But I digress.

Yes, particularly on A Million Days, the production makes the song, intentionally or not, sound rough, and frankly, sound a bit crap listened to through some decent cans. Where the drumming comes in it near the beginning it sounds very poor.

Sometimes Prince's production is too clean for my tastes. I guess that's why I like the sound of A Million Days and Cinammon Girl. My favorite era when it comes to production is the Come/Gold era, so I guess that tells you everything....

It is evident as well when I listen to those songs on my headphones and turned up loud

I totally agree.

Tracks one and two are flawless, but the rock tracks seems rushed and distorted. Maybe he meant it that way, but it doesn't sound good up against those tracks that are clean.

I think its particularly bad on Marrying Kind and If I was the man. It sound like he recorded the whole lot in a couple of hours. The "unclean" production sounds very similar to Chaos & Disorder tracks. Mix the new one with these tracks and they work well.

I actually like the base and distortion on Cinammon Girl. that works. Its a bit similar to "Reaching One" by Wendy & Lisa.

agreed. That´s what I thought, too. It doesn´t sound right. I don´t know if he did it on purpose. But we all know that he knows how to create a polished sound ( > Emancipation, New Power Soul).
See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

I am running a digital sound system (Dolby Digital) with an optical audio hookups. The songs you mention are a little messy. I really dont feel that the levels are too high -- most of the tracks are however, bass heavy which is true for most of Prince's work (Just listen too She Loves Me for Me from TRC) I find myself increasing the treble and decreasing the bass a lot.

That's what's frustrating. He's certainly capable of good production. Even on this album.
News is perfectly produced, so it's not the live drums that's a problem.
Endorphinmachine is perfectly produced, so it's not rock music that's a problem.
Maybe it's just that Prince's stereo is better than ours.
I read how the Beatles would listen to their stuff on the cheapest radio they could find, so they knew it would sound good to the average person.

I actually prefer the production on that those songs to the almost sterile sound of the more funk oriented songs. I am also a musician/music producer/engineer...so call me crazy, but I like it dirty.

David Z could've helped with that.
