Batman Album is Excellent!

During the rush of the Musicology Tour I have purchased several of Prince's older albums that I had either lost or never bought. Among them was the Batman soundrack. After listening to it I just had to ask am I alone or does anyone else agree that this album is fantastic! Partyman is one of the funkiest tunes ever and it blows away anything on Grafitti Bridge. In fact I think the whole album is much better than GB. I already loved Scandolous but I had no idea that Trust and Viki Waiting were such great songs. But even better than those is Lemon Crush which is just an amazing little jam! I know that this album is a soundtrack but I think it is definately one of Prince's most underated works. I would love to get some feedback on this.

It really is Prince's last great album. Even the weak tracks are good in their own way and are consistent with the album overall.

It was a weak album
i didn't think it was suppose to be strong tho
Probably his best weak album!

Batman is fantastic.
It is easily the last great Prince album.
Songs like Lemon Crush, Scandalous and Electric Chair are fantastic.
I just can't believe all the things people say !

Somebody either don't know music or just don't know what there talking about.
The Batman soundtrack was a great album and i will tell u y.
Scandalous, Partyman and Batdance just 2 name a few, is probably his biggest hits.
These songs definitely took this album 2 the top of the charts and sold over 5,000.000 copys.

I agree all the way - actually Batman was the first Prince album I bought, and I was crazy about the funk. Thats why I have been a Prince-fam in 15 years! The Future is one of the most funkiest songs Prince have made!

You didn't buy the earlier albums yet????? I sure hope so, cause
"Batman" is very weak compared to everything released earlier ....

If you really still have to buy the real classic albums like "Dirty Mind" and "1999" .....
I'll expect some more enthousiastic threads from you in the near future.

The Mark Moore/William Orbit remix of 'The Future' is his greatest remix.

Interesting how he used William Orbit before Madonna did.

If Prince's ears were as open to other influences now - as they were then, he would be working with Basement Jaxx.

I'm glad to see that everyone seems to agree that the Batman album is great, but his "last great album"? I might say that it was his last great album with that type of eighties funk but certainly not his last "great" album. What about The Gold Experience and Emancipation. Emancipation especially, granted not all tracks are phenomanal but that would have been a difficult task with so much music. None the less Emancipation is an amazing piece of work. And I still say Lemon Crush is great "Lemon Crush, what a Rush"!

Oh no, I have all the albums I just meant that I was replacing some that I had either lost or only had on tape. The Batman album was just one that I had never bought. And by no means do I think the Batman album is anywhere near as good as say 1999. But I think it is a really good album that doesn't seem to get talked about much now even though it was a success for Prince.

Not great albums cuz they had too many flaws. TRC is a shit album, so far from even being tolerable.

Please... this is only your OPINION, so don`t make it appear factual. Correct phrasing would be: "I consider TRC a shit album!" or "In my opinion TRC is a shit album!".

Just giving you some schooling in debating. wink

It's cool that batman is getting some recognition around here! Love "Partyman" too (check the music video)! "Batdance" is genius! That tempo change is sure class! The snippets from the movie add alot the songs too!

Personally though, i prefer "grafitti bridge", which is alot longer than Batman! "Grafitti bridge" is more like "1999" in that it is all about fun and hard dance numbers!

batman is weak...think about the build up to that point...

parade
sign o the times
lovesexy

and then...bada bada bada bada bada bada

BATMAN!!!

sure, i played the shit out of when it came out but it was work to like it.
i would play it and then go back and listen to sign o the times for months on end.
thank god graffiti bridge came out a year later.

always felt that Prince only did Batman to appease Warner Bros. after shelving
the Black Album and then releasing Lovesexy as a 1 track CD...

remember Batman in a Can! Should have stayed there.

Personally, the only album I dislike more is NPS. I think Batman is filled with crappy, throw away songs. Its hardly a "great" album. Prince could have done this album in his sleep. Songs like "Lemon Crush" and "Trust" are just plain bad, no matter how you slice it. barf

Totally agree the Batman Album was great. I remember thinking it was a breath of fresh air. I've always been a little hesitant about really mentioning this album because of so much negative feedback it gets from fans. But I've always loved this album. Long Live the Batman Soundtrack.

Agreed. Couple of nice tracks, and a LOT of filler. Very tossed-off, crass and synthetic sounding.

nod

I'll never forget how dissapointed I was with that album. Prince had seemed to be on this roll that was unstoppable, then he turned around and did this. Proof that not everything he did in the 80s was brilliant.

I think one of our biggest problems as Prince fans is constantly comparing classic albums to just plain good albums. Yeah, Sign O the Times is amazing and Parade and Lovesexy were both something new and innovative. However, from the standpoint of a fun, danceable album Batman fits the bill.
As far as Prince "appeasing" WB that is silly. Nothing in P's history has shown that he gave a F&*% about what WB's thought. Personally I think he did the soundtrack because he was a Batman fan. You may remember during the Oprah interview that he played the Batman theme from the TV show and told Oprah that was the first song he ever learned to play. (and yes I saw the Musicology special but he clearly said that Rollin on the River was the first song he learned to play on GUITAR)
Also... I honestly believe that a lot of the negative feeling towards this album is because it is the soundtrack to the Batman movie. Almost as if a lot of the orgers resent is because of the commercial aspect to it, as if we want to ignore it because we can not believe P would do something so mainstream. True? Yes, no?

i've never liked this album, although i do remember when it first came out back in '89 and how i'd hear "partyman" and "the arms of orion" on Q-102 like every damn day...i call the batman soundtrack/album prince's "fat cat" album. seemed like he was sorta goin through the motions in this one.
