Intentional flaws in P songs

What's with the choppy sounds during the guitar solo of "She's always in my hair" (the version on the B sides CD)? Also in "One of Us" (from Rave I think) there is a weird feedback sound that repeats consistently, but doesn't contribute musically at all. Why does P add these things to some songs?

I don't think he always adds them so much as sometimes leaves them in.

The ringing that can be heard during the chorus of 'One Of Us' is really annoying for me.

Other flaws such as the mistake in the recording of 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker' were apparently ones he chose to leave in because he liked them.

I don't know if this falls into what this thread is about, but what is up with the song transitions on 'Musicology?' It is very choppy. It's only noticeable when you have the songs on repeat.

'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker' was the first song to be recorded in Prince's new home studio in March, 1986.

Susan Rogers: There was no high end at all, half the console wasn't working. It could have been remixed, but Prince loved it the way it was.'

(Similarly, with 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' there was a fault with the microphone resulting in voice distortion.)

Susan Rogers: When I came back in to the control room and listened to it, I thought he was going to rip my head off. But he liked the sound of it, I guess. He never said a word about it. But I cringe every time I hear it because it was a horrible mistake."

Quoted in Per Nilsen's 'DanceMusicSexRomance' and Liz Jones' 'Slave To The Rhythm'

I have to go listen to "One of Us" to hear this noise...

I don't remember the choppy sounds during the solo in "Shes always in my hair" I remember he throws in a few vocalistics to echo the guitar, and the nose of the guitar is raw and spikes....

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker sounds fine to me... sounds like the high end is there in the percussion... maybe its just misisng on the vocal, which gives it that midnight feel.

Temptation

Let's not forget the "cough" on "Raspberry Beret." My perfectionist ex-girlfriend saw the video recently on one of my DVD compilations and it blew her mind.

She started chattering like a robot in full "does not compute" meltdown: "What did Prince just do? Why did he do that? Why did he leave that in there? Why didn't he edit that out? Rewind that part! He didn't do that! Was that a mistake? Was it planned? Why why why?"

It drove her crazy! Thank you Prince. Pure Genius.

How about in "Little Red Corvette" when Prince is singing with at least two voices and one vocal track says, "A body like yours ought to be in jail" and the other vocal track says, "A body like yours ought to be in chains." You actually hear "jail" and "chains" at the same time. Why'd he leave it in there like that? Strange.

TheFrog

Much as I love the two songs, I think the bridge from Let's Work going into Annie Christian is really sloppy on the Controversy lp. The beats just don't tie up at all. Surely could have easily been mixed better. Presumably, since it's so blatantly poor it's an intentional 'flaw'.

Also mentioned are the background vocal tracks to "Forever In My Life" , which he decided to leave in the wrong place, and later performed it that way.

yep because the backing vox say the lyrics before him. on the sott movie i always thought that was genius with sheila bonnie and cat singin it before him especially when they say "my past" and then he says when i'm with you girl i have no past. just special funny to know it was a mistake in the beginning but i'm glad he left it!

BoraBora

What about that short feedback sound placed near the end of "Lovesexy" (the song)?
I like it (I like every single sound on that record) but many times I asked myself what's the meaning of it.

UptownDeb

The intro to the extended version of Sexy Dancer. Studio chatter? The engineer? is talking about the "mix", or something.
