i know, oh poor little prince, some one has said he turned in a shitty cover version! lets send him flowers and then jump off a cliff to our deaths in disgust.

to everyone moaning that i only listened to the snippet, i know i did. i said that as a disclaimer in the opening post. but so what, i got an idea of the production, the guitar lines, the gist of the whole song already. so unless the remake suddenly finds some balls and possesses something other than the air of a vapid, glossy, professional karaoke session, i cant see myself changing my mind.

ill buy the CD though, and see how the full version fares.

prince IS generally a poor covers artist, both live and on record, but occasionally, he does pull some decent ones out. i always thought his take on 'one of us' was one of the best songs hes ever recorded.

I heard Hendrix on a live at Berkely album, and believe me, Prince is good, but at his best Hendrix was God. His solo on Stone Free nailed my heart to a rainbow.

You know, I just listened to a 29 second snippet of that performance. This Hendrix dude is waaaay overrated if you ask me...

I suspect it's possible to listen to a 30 second snippet of many classic songs / acclaimed recordings and mistakenly conclude that the performace is average / disappointing if you haven't hrard the whole thing

The top left hand corner of the 'Mona Lisa' is pretty ordinary if you're acquainted with Da Vinci's art, but you haven't seen the full work.

Hendrix snob here. I'm not crazy about a lot of covers Mr. Nelson has done be they Jimi or other artists BUT ...

1) It was just a 25 second snippet

2) Most of us have heard him cover this song many times over already, so what exactly were you expecting?

3) I guess all the good press P has been getting over the past 2 months was just too much for the perpetual complainers and whiners that they need something to cry and gripe about.

4) The stuff on The Undertaker disk is greatly overrated and I wish some hardcore fans would stop comparing every rock/blues based solo he does to that crap ass boot from 1994.

5) I don't care for Jimi's cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love".

I have to agree w/ this. The Undertaker, for some reason, is given way too much hype. Had it seen an official release, nobody would ever talk about it, but since it's a bootleg it suffers from "Black Album syndrome" - meaning, undue hype just because it has that aura of being forbidden fruit.

Anyway. I know, off topic a little, but oh well razz

fucking HELL you've only heard a ten-second snippet!

That's NOT long enough to judge a WHOLE recording!

It defies simple logic.

What I heard sounded very interesting and I wanted more!

well, im not expecting prince to do it just like hendrix, but this is terrible, its like r kelly doing a cover of bambi in the style of fiesta.

Its comments like these that should make us all realize to take things very lightly here at the org.. Cause I just took a listen and some peoples perception are so eek .. u just have to hear for yourself.

ALL of Prince's Music done live is always amazing!! BUT when you let him record it, it is always over-produced!! always!! eek confused

Reflections is another example of this! The Tavis Smiley version it way better! I think Prince gets so bored he looks for things to fix in the studio. IF he didn't he probably would have 12,000 unreleased songs instead of 2,000 lol

Prince + Live = Amazing!

Prince does not copy, if he covers a particular song he pretty much makes it his own or does it his own way.

Because this is a tribute 2 Jimi, we just expected him to lash out like we know he is capable of; besides Prince will always avoid being compared 2 anyone else hence the resulting version of the song.

Besides nobody else could ever play like Jimi did. U may find so called "better" guitarists but no one plays like Jimi.

remember this is the org, the same website that decided the whole of princes 2-3 hour concert in australia was shite and vegas in style because of a 30 poor quality small screen snippet of baby im a star. they ignored every single journalist and attendee of the concert saying it was the best concert they have ever seen. they're just fams after all! not the bitter, cynical, soulless husks that dwell here on the org...

well, after getting the proper CD, it turns out that the full version is mediocre as well. im not even comparing it to the original, i didnt want a replica, but there isnt much to say about this except in prince's hands, its become an incredibly drab, banal lifeless bore of a song.

Settle down, Beavis. Don't project the opinions of a few members on to an entire website, just because that website happens to allow negative comments to go uncensored. I mean, I know it's trendy for supporters of certain sites to bash each other and all, but Britney Spears was considered trendy once too, ya know. rolleyes

You do realize that the assumption will be that you'd effectively made up your mind about the song prior to hearing the full version, so that it never really had a chance. I'm not saying that's what you did, just that it may be perceived that way.

Oh, but it's OK for you, Anxiety, to squash softandwet's informed and humorous opinion regarding haters? Too bad you don't spend as much time squashing the haters and all the bile they spew around here.

You really have your head in the sand if you think these worthless cynical clowns are limited to "a few members." Unfortunately they are running real Prince fans away. I've heard from a lot of fans (and I'm speaking of fans, not fams) who refuse to come here anymore. I've also heard from newbies who visited and immediately left because they were attacked online by lurking haters.

Damn shame, after all the time and work Ben and others put into this community. Dissent and informed opinions are great. Bitter, cynical, uninformed haters who just come here to flame-bait and disrespect others need to find another place to roost.

Wait a tic, maybe I'm wrong about this, but I got a version of Prince singing "Red House" with Johnny Lang and it rocks. I think it's much better than Hendrix's version.
