Is prince treading water with musicology?

I mean at least TRC was Original
these songs sound like a bunch of second rate Prince songs
yeah there good
but there not great...
hell if his spirituality delutted his music this much,
he might as well stick with the jazz cause this aint workin for me
i only listened to that C.D. 5 times and got sick
its covered ground
maybe he should make some Indie Funk surprise me lol
or stick with the new power jazz
but this is good...
but pathetic when you look at his history

I have to agree with you. This album is nothing earth-shattering or groundbreaking. I guess the fact that he's been out of the commercial loop for so long makes many people give this album more credit than it actually deserves. Most of the killer Bs from the 80s tower over the tracks from Musicology. Perhaps he just wanted to get something out there to take advantage of the buzz around the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain. Who knows?! I just hope the next album - god i hope it's true that the next project is with Wendy and Lisa - gives us something more worthwhile.

Not treading water, just playing it incredibly safe. "Musicology" is the dullest album he's ever made.
There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Well I think one of the things that make so many disagree on this is that some have heard the live version and some have not. Myself, I believe the CD is about as bland as can be. OTOH, I really started to enjoy the musicology track after hearing it live a few times.

I believe that Prince made a huge mistake by not using the NPG band on the CD. I mean heck, u have a kickass band like that and you don't use them? They really do make the tracks come to life behind Prince.
