so what on earth is FUNK? I've read many posts here trying to define the FUNKIEST P's song or album...
When I think of FUNK I think of the music style. Maybe I'm old fashion, but what comes to my mind are sthe sounds I heared from G. Clinton, J. Brown, Kool and the Gang... Lots of Bass & Brass So after (at last) listening to Musicology, I find it to be very FUNKY. Many people here will say "that cd is crap". So? Technically speaking... WHAT'S FUNK???? "America is a continent..."

As Prince said, if you can define funk then you don't know what funk is. So you can't go asking WHAT'S FUNK?! Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Well, here's what dictionary.com says about funk:
A type of popular music combining elements of jazz, blues, and soul and characterized by syncopated rhythm and a heavy, repetitive bass line. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Funk is the rhythm of The One. The One is the accent of the beat on the 1 & 3 of the meter instead of the traditional 2 & 4 (although there is Funk that uses traditional 2 & 4), in R&B/Soul this was pioneered by James Brown. He is the flashpoint.
Funk is/was Dr. J. with that bodacious afro taking off from the free throw line for a dunk. Funk is earthy. Funk CAN BE polished. Funk can be a party. Funk can be political. Funk can be silly. Funk is The Average White Band exhibiting the fact that they were anything but "average." Funk will not compromisingly tidy up to be taken home to meet June Cleaver. Funk was The Band of Gypsys. Funk is Steve Arrington's "Weak At The Knees." Funk is NOT Oprah. Funk is NOT "Friends." Funk is NOT Robin Givens. Funk is Bernie Mac. Funk is Marlon Brando calling attention to the film industry's treatment of Native Americans by sending Sacheen Littlefeather to give a speech rejecting his Oscar for The Godfather. Funk is George Jefferson. Funk is Muhammad Ali. Funk is the bassline Sir Paul plays at the 54 second mark of "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" (yes, I'm serious - go listen). Funk is James Jamerson. Funk is Bonham's drums and Jones' bass on "Good Times Bad Times." Funk is NOT The Cloud Guitar. Funk is NOT that damn hideous symbol guitar. Funk is The Leopard Skinned Hohner. And gawd dammit, Funk is NOT Alex Hahn. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

copy. print. save. etch in stone. worrrrrd UP... Supernova put it down. one comment i'd make is that the concept of the symbol...pre "The Artist..etc etc" IS funky.. Woman... Man... the beats they make... what's funkier than that? hit on the 1 ...the 3 ... shake it up and hit the 2....bring it home on the 4...doowhutchalike... as long as the rhythm is hot and deeply felt.. "... aw shit my hat done fell off... somebody gon see my bald spot.. " ********************************************

this is what the Scotsman newspaper said a couple of weeks ago:
Being Prince, he chucks in a cheesy electrofunk synth refrain, but the entire track is a groove more than a song. And paying innocuous tribute to the dancefloor greats is more the style of a Madonna or a Kylie. Prince, on the other hand, should be writing another dancefloor great. Particularly when he can draw on the talents of Brown’s legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker, who guests on a couple of tracks. which sort of says Musicology aint all that funky...
