Bart Van HatePrince and Other Thoughts

Opinion:

I think a lot of people are getting too worked up over the chart performance of Musicology. There are more important things to get excited about:

1. Prince is finally focused, at peace, inspired and interested in reaching out to the masses again. I have not heard the album yet but I sense that the truly exciting thing is that Prince has gotten over the hump of maturing and we may now be seeing the birth of an era where Prince reaches a new mature peak in songcraft a la Sting or other midlife artists.

2. The implications of this are that we may see some more groundbreaking music in the future. The word on the album is that it is very accomplished but not groundbreaking. With Prince getting back in the groove (i.e. the give and take and discpline engendered between expectation of masses and a sonically curious artist) it is possible that truly groundbreaking material of a different sort will start coming out of Prince.

3. People like Bart Van Hemlen in the 90s (is that guy still around?) are going to have to find things to do with their lives.

[I admit 3 isn't all that exciting]

I agree.

Prince can evolve and mature as an artist all he wants, that's fine..but just PUHLEEEZE don't turn into another version of STING. Ugh. I really liked Sting back in his Police days and his early days solo but I cannot stand the generic, boring shlock he pumps out nowadays.

Agree on most points.
Question: What is groundbreaking? Musicology is the most "groundbreaking" video on MTV right now.
"New Power slide...."
