Goes to show that us fams and fans aren't the only ones buying CDs and propelling Prince up the charts since most of us don't and won't own this particular CD.

New Records sold by Prince this week: 172k (not inc. concert sales) Old Records sold by Prince this week: 35k = about 25k VBO, 5k PR, combined about 3k Hits 1&2. Yeah...flocking for the old stuff in droves... Jokes aside, i would have thought people are checking out the old stuff cos they're going to concerts and shit, and want to know songs. plus VBO will be on offer and display, id be shocked if a significant proportion of the people buying the old greatest hits hadn't bought musicology the same week.

Does he get much money from the sales, since he doesn't own the rights?

Yes. Depending on what his contract was at the time. Which is anywhere between 50 cents and $1 per unit sold. Purple Rain may have been 50-75 cents since it was under his second contract with WB. The Very Best of Prince, I'm not sure how much he's getting paid, but it's something. I'm predicting Prince may make $150 million dollars this year alone in concerts (estimated: 20,000 arena seating x $75 = $1,500,00 per concert x 57 US/Canada Dates = $85,500,000). Who knows how many dates he will play in Europe, Asia and Oceania (Australian, New Zealand, etc.). Then factor in his tour merchandise ($50,000,000). He may have the highest grossing concert tour of 2004. I wonder if he would loan me $40,000 to become debt free. I think I will ask him when he's in Chicago.

Not all of that $75 goes to Prince you know!! The venue takes a big slice. Then there's tax. P's got a band to pay. Security and transport too. Plus the cost of the "free" CDs of course! And you reckon he'll sell $50m of merchandise?!

"New Records sold by Prince this week: 172k (not inc. concert sales)" Columbia is paying top dollar for promotion, radio, press advertisments, tv ads, radio ads, racking, tour support, shipping, wages of staff. This money of course is re-coupable from prince on royalties. so prince is paying (although hopefully breaking even with the profits from tour...) a lot. he won't be maing much per album sold at the moment. plus the 172k sales a week is as big as it's going to get . your first week is normally your biggest. with all the hard work going on this high figure is richly deserved. - cool. "Old Records sold by Prince this week: 35k = about 25k VBO, 5k PR, combined about 3k Hits 1&2." warners is doing fuck all to promote it. they aint spending a dime. it won't even be shipped out on it's own to retailers. it'll be on a lesser sell-in deal to retailers (known as a catalouge ship) - where it gets added to a current ship so the retailers buy in back catalouge as cheap as possible. so there really isn't a penny being spent. it's also a healthy amount of sales for some 3 or so years old release. guess which record company is making more profit..? if the WB cumilative sales can remain at around 25,000 per week and Musicology settles to around 45-50,000 sales (which is normal amounts), even prince himself will be earning more from the WB sales... funny old world NB this isn't me 'hatin', i'm just pointing out an ironic twist..

I know he has to pay the band and typical rental for a venue is $20,000 - $40,000. $50M in merchandise is agood numbers for his world wide tour (U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Oceania). At the Champaign concert, I shelled out $75 for two t-shirts. The next concert I'm getting the program book which will cost $25 - $30. Okay, maybe he'll make $10M - $15M, but he will still get paid and all of the merchandise money is his because no one's really buying Rhonda's CD.

Ok, following the EWM "logic" for a moment and just looking at sales figures this would mean people like his new stuff at least 5 times more than his old stuff !!?!?!? pleeeezzzze get your act together... hey, it's perfectly OK for u to dislike Prince recent output AND to post about it around here if u feel for (as long as u don't have anything better to do in your "real life" outside...) but for your own good: switch on your brain before posting childish arguments like above or U'll be the ORG-Clown til the end of days anway... I dunno why recordsales should be ANY argument for quality at all, I mean looking at the charts in recent years... come on! . Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives. The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists. Is it a deal?
