Envious Of New Fans?

I have to admit that I am really envious of fans who are just discovering Prince or even rediscovering him after 15 years or so. Imagine being able to listen to so many of the hidden gems that the man has released in the interim or even listening to a boot with a few of the classic unreleased tunes. It would almost be overwhelming to listen to all that good music for the first time in a short period of time. Whether you find Emancipation great or maybe the Love Symbol is more your style. One is bound to find some new sounds that would speak to them. Here to you lucky SOBs!

You know what though? Even though the songs lose the shock of the new, we've got something that new fans won't...

NOSTALGIA!

It would be Awesome to listen to some of these songs for the first time again.
It is seems like too much to digest for new fans.

It is really cool to pop in an album that you haven't listen to for a few months.

There are so many songs.

and I hunger for more everyday!

I hunger as well. When an unexpected tune like "Magnificent" becomes available, you get that good anticipation feeling again.

[Candace outs herself as someone who loved Prince back in the day but kinda lost track of him for quite awhile blackeye] You're right! Over the last few weeks, I've bought up most of the stuff I missed so I've been listening to/watching Prince practically day and night! music All that (not to mention Musicology and all the hoopla of the last few months) has been a lot to digest! But probably the most astounding thing isn't just the sheer quantity of material, but the fact that he's put out so much GREAT material! (I haven't heard any boots yet...I've been plenty busy catching up on the legit stuff!) cool

Like I said, I wish I could be in your shoes for a while. There is so much great stuff (both released and otherwise). I hope you can make it to one of the concert stops to completely cement your reintroduction. Have fun!

Better not to be a new fan. The new fans missed out on the best concerts, and releases of good albums.

good point. us long-termers have heard the music bit by bit over the years. .. can you imagine being a new fan, going out and buying a stack of albums all at once and listening to each one after the other on a long road trip or something?
actually, once i did that with moby. total music feast

Well, I am one of those fans that is rediscovering Prince. I was a fan from about '80 - '88 and stopped listening to P after Lovesexy. I can't believe all the music I have missed out on. I have been buying and downloading like crazy. I have to admit, I do get kind of jealous of the fans that stuck with P during his 'down' time. So many of you are so well-versed in P and his music that it has me like.. eek . My head spins just trying to keep up with all the things I missed out on. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be a totally newbie to Prince. I would probably lose my mind... biggrin . It feels good to be back... wink

The new fans I know (pretty much the people I played some CD's for because I was dragging them along to the Musicology concert), they don't appreciate him like I do, I don't think... It's disappointing in a way. Some of my roommates are playing his music all the time now and talking about how good it is, but they just don't seem to sing along with the same heart and look at his pictures with the same love as I always have. They talk about him like he's just a front man for just another band that they like. In my eyes he's so far above just good music or just a band... But I guess it's just what everyone else has been saying: it's too much for a newbie to take. Those of us who got to know him gradually learned to love him a different way. razz

But who am I to talk? I was a newbie once too. I wasn't even born when his first albums came out, and I was only 12 when I started collecting his CD's, the year The Gold Experience was released. Within a year or two I'd become so much more familiar with him, and I can honestly say it was way too much to take. But I've got years of memories now, not nearly as many as I wish I could have... I wish I'd been there from the beginning! sad But as I remember how it was for me, 12 years old and getting to know Prince at the same time I got to know myself and the world, I do envy the newbies for the awesome experience they're having getting to know him now when there's even more to discover.
I reject your reality and substitute my own. nutty
