NME gives musicology 6 out of 10

an accurate enough review (except for the parts stating that illusion, coma... and the title track are good songs) and thankfully without all the OTT 'he's back' fellatio of the other reviews.

NME are fuckers, I don't care if they give the album 1 or 10 - they're going to be wrong about it anyway.

Once again proving my theory about British folks (generally) not liking it as much.

It's at least an 8.

im fairly sure it was NME that reviewed RAVE and gave it either 2/10 or one star or something. and said for the opening second of the title track you think maybe hes on to something, btu from then on its shite. and then called him a very very dead fish. ah well, fuck em! hes proved em wrong now, even giving him a 6/10 for the album shows he's not dead.

No. We just think "Musicology" is crap.

well, considering that nme couldn't pull the strokes' dicks out of their mouth for even 5 seconds, this really doesn't hold much weight in my opinion. weren't they one of those foolish mags that hailed the strokes as the saviours of rock n' roll? evillol

NME is just a trendy mag.Its will suck the dick of the next big thing and then try and start the backlash against them after a few months, its total fake bullshit, but then again most album reviews are and I never buy albums based on reviews because they are just the opinion of one person generally. You should never let album reviews influence your opinion.

Spunky

Reviewing an album is a form of narcissism and the NME more than most 'music' journals displays this feature.

The NME believes that it is reflecting the views of its readers who are mainly young university students or middle age men still believing that they are young university students.

The journalist thinks of his or her potential audience, which also includes their fellow colleagues, and how he wishes them to see him or her. He or she wants the audience to believe that they are one of them. Further, music journalists are like sheep, one baa's and the others follow. The current music gods of these people are Cold Play, Radio Head, 50 cent and the now Saviours of Brit Pop Franz Ferdinand etc.

The majority of music critics want to be the one to boast that they discovered the next Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. I would be surprised if Prince would ever again get a good review from the NME. The NME is not representative of the British Music Press or reviewers. I have seen and read several reviews of the Album and all have been positive, for example, the Observer Sunday Newspaper, The Timeout weekly magazine who rate it as their top album of the moment. Anyhow, I could not give two hoots about these people opinions because that is just what it is. If a piece of music touches me that is all that matters.

Critics are the mouthpiece of any industry and hence have vested interest. Sometimes their views correspond with mine other time it doesn't.

Sad.

When I used to read the NME (inevitably it was just before and during my University days) you could read some fair and decent reviews about Prince in amongst the Morrisey love-ins. Hell, even Julie Birchall wrote something half supportive (and half pretentious) about him.

But in those days there was a chance a solid writer would also praise the output of someone who was regarded by most as fashionably passe and commercially dead - but they still saw and heard the musicianship in an album. Most of those writers left and it's sad that NME doesn't appear to have retained that calibre of journalist. Instead, there's an earnest focus on pleasing the target audience at all costs ... oh, and me being a boring old nostalgic fart might not help.

Or it could just be that in their opinion a pop album of retreaded religious messages and PG politics is nothing more than a 6 out of 10.

No, it's a job. Look, they think Musicology is lukewarm. I don't. I think it's dull. You don't agree with me? Great. The End. Move on.

Um....what? There's barely a scrap of religious mention on the album, and what exactly do you mean by PG politics? You were looking for, say, intense violence and strong sexual situations?

Stop talking through your arse. Without reviews you, or anyone else for that matter, probably wouldn't have heard of Prince. Without reviews 'up and coming' artists would very rarely make it past their local pub. Without reading reviews, our opinions (and appreciation of music) wouldn't have changed since we were kids. Go out and buy a decent music magazine for a few months i.e. Mojo or Uncut and read the review section. You'll soon work out which journalist you like, and if you decide to buy one of their recommendations, you more than likely won't be disappointed.

P.S. I don't mean to sound patronising, but it pisses me of when people say reviews are worthless.I'd not bought a Prince album on it's day of release since prince was released. I read a good review and bought Musicology and I wasn't disapointed.

It's funny: you say drop it, but you keep battlin'! It's a VERY good, somewhat fluffy pop album from Prince. We can settle our differences here mighty quick. What do you think of "Gold Experience"?

Well you are being fucking patronising cheeky fuck.
I used to buy that worthless rag when I was younger, very often albums would be called trash and were good and vice versa ,so what difference did a reviewers point of view make"absolutely fuck all".
I have bought Mojo on a regular basis since 96 and have a fair few copys of Uncut ,I read the articles and rarely pay much attention to the reviews sorry and all.
Put it this way if the reviewers that reviewed Musicology happened not to like the album ,would you not of bought it in that case.

So you've never bought an album because it got a good review in a magazine? If you say yes, I don't believe you. Surely reading a good review is just like getting a recomendation of friend? I know for fact that I trust say, one friend's recomendation but not another. Isn't that the same with a journalist's review? You read/listen to an opinion and decide for yourself. Perhaps I'm being ols and bitter, but I'd love to know how do you decide if an album's worth buying? Do you just turn up at random gigs? Or do you go to a night club and constantly ask the dj what he's playing? Sounds like hard work for me. I'll stick with recommendations from friends and journalists. They've been allright so far..

And, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying Musicology if it had got shit reviews.

Initally all I was saying was that I dont let reviews in mags sway my opinion, granted if a friend says this or that is great I might check it out, but I have friends that like Eminem and Robbie Williams etc and they can tell me its good till they are blue in the face and I won't agree.
And yes I have bought albums based on reviews and thats probablys why I dont now. I find new music if I watch tv or listen to radio and find out what I like ,also musicians that I already like may name check bands/musicians they like or are influenced by and that is another way I may try out new music, yes I also turn up at festivals sometimes I hear a new artist and go from there,or I watch films etc and like that music.
Its been years like at least 4 since I've bought an album based on a review and it aint done me any harm I feel I listen to more diverse music rather than what others deem as being good.
Also how do you guage a good review.

Why, what will that qualify in your mind? I think it's over-produced and should have had Days of Wild and Interactive on it, now that you ask, though.

Musicology is adult-alternative Prince, with a funky kick.
No hard feelings.

Well, NME has an history of pretty bad Prince reviews. I don't remember them all, but I think they were quite hars with ATWIAD, Parade and Lovesexy.
