"Musicology" Vs. "Sign O' The Times?"

Which one do you prefer?

I'd go with "Musicology" but I never really liked "Sign O The Times" as a whole; just sounds random songs to me while Musicology has more of a flow.

And what do y'all think?

Second that . . . SOTT is one of the greatest albums of all time. Musicology is "OK", not a masterpiece of creative, musical, and lyrical genius like SOTT.

Hmmm... Well, I always skip 'It' and 'U Got The Look'.

The last time I listened to the Sign O' The Times album, I was surprised at just how many songs just seemed to plod on endlessly. My fast-forward finger was itching halfway through 'Hot Thing' and 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man'. I guess I've over-played the album and need to rest it for a little while.

Sign O' The Times wins but if this thread was 'Musicology' Vs 'Batman' - well, I really don't know anymore. The Top Ten in my head has definitely shifted.

I love Musicology, but Sign O' the Times is better, first of all, just for the sheer volume of songs on it. If albums were pizza, Musicology would be one hot slice of pizza with everything on it except anchovies. Sign O' the Times would be a whole pizza with everything on it including anchovies, marshmallows, and ice cream.

Secondly, Sign O' the Times is a double album and its got 20 years of fond memories over Musicology.

I think the better comparison would be between Musicology and Rave. Both are comeback attempts with a couple of above average songs, some decent songs, and some not so decent songs. Both lack real standout, signature tracks that could drive the album home. Take The Love Below for example. If one were to believe the album to be terrible-- which I certainly don't-- there's atleast Hey Ya on it. People will remember it if nothing else. For me, Musicology is already fading away after one week. I would say it's old age creeping up on me but I'm still fond of TRC and recent albums from other artists. smile

Well SOTT wins definitely but MUSICOLOGY is definitely a good CD.....who cares what people remember a CD for???? I see that People will forever place stock and their value and worth in how other people view them...and their creativity sad

SOTT of course. That's his masterwerk.

But I think that Musicology as good as his lesser GREAT albums, The Gold Experience, The Rainbow Chillen, etc...

If you ask any music fan to sit down for an afternoon, put on some headphones and listen to the entire 2 discs of "Sign O the Times," they will never ever question that Prince is possibly the greatest musician that ever lived.

Musicology is a great album, but SOTT is a musical masterpiece and cannot be compared with this. These albums are on 2 different levels. I mean, SOTT is funky, sexy, spiritual, uplifting and outrageous. It's like a comparing a 100 ft buffet to a McDonald's Drive-Thru! No maam!

Why are we comparing these album? Prince was at this peek when he made SOTT & Lovesexy, Musicology is fair average, I say Prince can do better than Musicology we know this cause we have witness, the variety of SOTT, which inculde the beauty of "Adore", the magic of "If I was your girlfriend", the great funk of "Housequake". Musicology is fair, soft, variety of few. I am saying SOTT.

But indeed.

You are right. The deep lyrical content of Mucicology is showing us Prince had recorded his masterpiece. No mythological three record disc with divine songs like Sign O The Times can beat it. Sign O The Times is a silly collection of strange songs, while Musicology is SO clearly a masterpiece in substance.

Who needs stupid songs like If I Was Your Girlfriend when you can play even deeper introspective lyrics like Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance? I never understood If I Was Your Girlfriend anyways, I mean; what the fuck? Is he gay or sumthing?

I indeed like the superb guitarsolo's on the track Musicology way better than that whack guitar picking like that on I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man or The Cross.

Who needs The Cross anyway? Ever since Prince found the truth it has been The Christ anyways.

And that inferior photography of the vynil version of Sign O The Times? What was Prince thinking; wearing a miniskirt?
The cover pic is also unclear. What a whack job.

Sorry to sound harsh, but flame snipped - anx mad. SOTT and Musicology aren't even meant to be compared; Musicology doesn't try to break new ground, Musicology is not a "Sign of the Times," Sign of the Times was experimental, Musicology is not. The Musical styles of the album (possibly excluding Housequake) don't even compare.

How can you compare material from two completely different eras, especially one which was groundbreaking, and the other's just a regular album.

mad demon snipperoonie - anx .

I did do a huge rant here about all these comparison threads, and no logical or interesting discussions, but computer crashed edit sad
