Next album to be jazz?

There's a thread over at Housequake where some dude from Bluenote is quoted as saying he's been approached for the distribution of Prince's next record. Because we're all used to Prince releasing a few billion records every second, our attention spans must be waining no matter how great we think Musicology is....so, is this rumour possibly good news for ya'll?

Would you welcome a jazz album with open arms? If not, how should the next be like? Another radio-safe release that ain't gonna alienate fans, or something totally daring like TRC?

Dudes with vocabulary limited to 'shit', use this as an excercise to explore your imaginative side and describe what the next album should be like!

Personally I'd like him to go for something like NEWS, but a few notches up on the funk-index, and with minimalist obtuse yet lyrics...not to rave about NEWS, but no matter how boring you might find it, the way the music changes in a single piece would have been exponentially improved with the right vocals/lyrics, so that you'd have essentially several mini-songs fused to a 14 minute complete suite...now that would be unique. Oh wait, that's Lovesexy right?

I love Prince's jazz albums. Rainbow Children was his best LP ever. Do another album like that and I'm happy. Who the hell cares if it's commercial.

I've never considered TRC to be a jazz record...the title track aside, I hear very little jazz on the album.

Actually yeah, he should do an album where he gets into his guitar as much as he did at the rnrhof on each damn song.

There's also a buzz that it's gonna be Xpectation that is released on Blue Note - I think that would be nice, especially if it were released kinda on the mellow as a catalog/side project release to Musicology - I think it's an album that could stand a wider release than it's gotten.

I like the way you looked at NEWS. I thought of it that way too. He really experimented with the structure this time. Anyway, I see what people are suggesting for his next album. My question is: Will you be disappointed if he doesn't go the way you think he should? It seems a lot of people have all of these expectations, then when he doesn't do it, they get upset, when in reality, he can't possibly know what you want. Nor should he care if he did. I have no expectations. I'll go where ever he wants me to follow. Funk, jazz, rock and roll, neo soul. Just take me with you.

isnt that quote 22 years old? i thought the point of that was to say "stop harping on about old stuff, and check out this new shit" or something to that effect. as opposed to him thinking jazz should die. he always seemed to have a love of jazz from what ive heard?

I agree - it's better than NEWS, which did get a "proper" release.

I reckon with the right promo - imagine him, Candy and Miss Mae all together - it could do OK.

Ubiquity

I wonder where people might get the idea from that Prince might do a Jazz album next. Prince has never done a Jazz album, and he only did fivefour albums (two of them by "Madhouse", the others would be TRC, News and Xpectation) that had some slight jazz influences.

Even if it was true that Prince had a deal with Blue Note Records, it wouldn`t necessarily have to be a Jazz album. Just like Verve Records, Blue Note today releases many straight ahead R&B albums.

I don`t know if I would ever wanna hear a Jazz album by Prince.. not because I don't like Jazz, but because I know Prince can't really play Jazz.

Anybody's entitled to his own opinion, man.

Anyway I'll welcome any style with open arms as long as it remains "Prince" style. Time will tell.

Surprise me.

I'm not really into what style of music he "should" do. Genre is irrelavent to me as long as he doesn't come off as if he's punching the clock - something he has done in the past. I'd like much more guitar than what was on Musicology, but that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be rock either. To me it's preferable if he acts as if he's onstage with that axe, as opposed to being in the studio with it. That's where he burnzzz.

I want passion.
I want conviction.
I want immediacy.
I want heavy drums.
I want a sense of urgency.
I want some asses wigglin'! eek shake
I want him to sound as if he doesn't give a damn about the zeitgeist.

But unlike a lot of Orgers, for me he doesn't have to reinvent the wheel to make compelling music.

Yeah man! but which version of witness? The one that's more syncopated and funkier right?

Yeah that'd do it. His next should just begin with an echoed feedback pop of guitar chord getting plugged in, then one chord reverbed bass, followed by a simple echoed drum beat, on top of which he should milk the notoriety he got from the rrhof/grammy stunts and lay down 60 minutes of solo jam, all splashed with technique and loads of effects. Like as if his mother died or somink. Hmm, you know what I mean.

I believe the new Rolling Stone piece on Prince (with Usher on the cover) has the Blue Note guy saying they're in discussions with Prince about releasing a collection of live instrumentals.

Something in the style (production and instrumentation) of TRC would be welcome, but only as a progression of the mindset displayed on Musicology - good times.

TRC was hardly strictly jazz, but no-one should deny the existence of it on the record. Some are very dismissive of Prince when it comes to jazz, which isn't surprisingly considering the aloof nature of the genre and many of its fans. Maybe if he was a coke fiend?

Remember, Prince has played around with jazz a lot in the past - most notably perhaps on the track 'Tamborine'.

That would be cool, anx. Would be nice to see it get more exposure/attention. Always did like Xpectation. That's jazz. The Rainbow Children is definitely jazz-influenced/flavored, with early stuff being near straight up j, albeit modern/pop or whatever label it's given nowadays. wink
