Do your parents dig Prince? My mom does (at least the songs she's heard). She wanted to see him here in Toronto, so I just bought her a pair for the second show. She asked my father, "Do you want to see Prince?". His response? (real bored-like): "You can see him anytime you want - just drive around the corner*."
*(My parents live near his Toronto residence). Anybody else out there got any parental-units that like any Prince?

no my mom doesn't, but then again, she thinks any song not mentioning God or Jesus, is devil's music. [This message was edited Mon Apr 26 10:03:20 2004 by mochalox] "Pedro offers you his protection."

my mom does -- she only hears it when I'm around,
and wouldn't listen to it on her own, but she does like it. It's grown on her over the last 20 years. Her favorites are When Does Cry and Purple Rain. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

It's almost like I never want to reveal who the artist is. I remember years ago playing Madhouse 8 album for my father, who like me is an avid jazz lover. He asked me who it was, looking at the cover. I said it's a group of musicians who played with Prince and I think he also plays on a couple of tracks. He immediately said something like, oh, this sucks. I don't like it, when just a few minutes earlier, he LOVED it. Same with Venus de Milo. I'll never forget I was playing it for him. When I told him it was Prince, he didn't believe me. People don't think that P is capable of making good, diverse music. In all fairness, I do believe that P's eccentricities cost him a great deal of respect among the community at large. While people are beginning to see his genius and musical talents, I have to admit that his odd behavior, extravagance and lasciviousness kind of distracted people from the fact that he truly is a gifted musician. Now that he's toned down his eccentric behavior, I actually got my father to admit that "he's o.k."

Now she has the Musicology CD & I hear her playin' it all the time!! She wants 2 go 2 the concert w/me when he comes 2 Portland but I'm torn on who I'm gonna give my xtra ticket 2!!!! My Mum likes him until he screams. She always asks "why does he have to scream like that (eg. The beautiful ones)"
My Dad seems to relate Prince to the Rolling Stones. Saying how they were always deemed the different band. Beatles were mainstream and Rolling Stones were a bit different. Hence Prince being a bit different to the norm. He doesn't mind Prince. Thinks he's a genius, but a wierd one. http://www.myspace.com/savage1999uk

My mum loves him, but only since she saw him live last year.
She always liked "Cream", before that though.

I'll NEVER forget the day I dared bring home a Prince album from the store. My parents like to have KILLED me. (I had been covertly making dubs of my friends albums for a few years, but they didn't know.)
Twenty years later, they still don't like him, but at least they respect my love of his music. My mom actually went out of her way to find a copy of Inside the Purple Reign for me a few years ago.

No, but I like the fact that she didn't mind me listening to his music when I was growing up in the 80s.. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

My dad was born in 1930, he likes frickin' old ass band music and some guy named Roger Whittaker?????
You don't want to know what my dad says about Prince, but I swear... It was my dad who came home with the Purple Rain movie in the 80's as a surprise And he taped the RRHOF for me without me even asking.... So who knows what he REALLY thinks. All he knows is that I love Prince, and I guess that all that matters.

Mom loves his musicianship (she's a pianist) and Dad just loves him period. I'm taking Dad to see Prince on June 20 here in Detroit (appropriately on Father's Day!)

My dad was a fan since Purple Rain and collected until Lovesexy. Then I took over and got the rest. He still likes him but doesn't follow what he does anymore. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

i kind of inherited the Prince fan thing. My mom totally dig prince, maybe more then me (at times). We got to shows together the whole 9. She's old school...which is cool cuz it kind of makes me old school. I saw Purple Rain, UTCM, and Sign O The Times in the Theater...not many 25 year old fans can say that. The only sucky thing was when I moved out years & years ago we had to split up our collection. But its all good...together we got about everything you can imagine. Nero

I had an experience almost like that with my mother when I was a teenager. I truly believe there is something in Prince's catalog that everybody would dig, even if they don't know it's him. Things like this happen a lot. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I always though my father quite indifferent to Prince. I remember playing Dirty Mind on family vacations with the volume all in the rear speakers, a bit concerned my parents would tune into the lyrical content. They never did. I had bought Sign O the Times on record (passed on CD as it was too expensive, a good movie in hindsite when I read about the poor sound on the CD). Anyway played the LP at my father's house , as I dont have a player. Since then I have been over there about 5 times, 2 times catching him blasting the music from the LPs. the other 3 times , the record was on the turntable, usually on side 3, he loves the drum sound and percussion on these records, and to his credit, his old ears are keen, the sound just thumps on record, with his great new speaker. Tried playing 1999 over there (on CD, he likes Corvette), sounds tinny and restrained by comparison, I need a record player! I think you can now call him a fan, played him concert movie of Sign o the Times, he was impressed with the production, the dances, and of Cat and Sheila!

My mom & a couple of people from my family ALWAYS mention 'Purple Rain', that's what they like & remember...it's no wonder while I was a little younger I hardly knew he was even making records until...just a while ago!!! But everytime I play a song & blast it, they're like who's that?! One song I recall specifically is '17 days'...And I be like PRINCE!!! & they're like, 'wow', that sounds nice! I think I need to drag someone to the concert with me...although I'm going with my Love, but I bought my CD over to my sister's house who likes alternative rock, & she liked 'A Million Days', 'Life of the party' & found 'Cinammon Girl' very interesting, and everyone I know who has heard 'Musicology' likes it immediately as well.. I being in my 40s and my mom now close to 70, she has come to appreciate the musical genius side of him. The lyrics are another thing.
I can still remember watching "Donahue?" with Tipper Gore repeating the words to "Darlin' Nikki" and watching my mom's head turn like the exorcist to ask, "DId he really say that on the record." Being still afraid in my old age , I answered, "Ah mom, I just like the music." hehehehe Now, when I say Prince is touring, she's like so which concerts you going too. She's cool, just don't say the word "masturbate" around her and she's fine. **************************************************

my mom likes prince but i think i actually got her into him, lol. she used to think he was "a creep," in her own words. my dad, when he was still alive, liked prince. he actually took me to the purple rain show when i was a little kid. which, in hindsight, kinda seems like bad parenting

I cant remember when Prince wasnt "played " by my mom. And if it wasnt my mom, it was my aunt or uncle. His music was played at all family functions. They used to mix him in with the oldies and the "spanish music". His music has always been a part of my life. Now I am honored to share "him" with my children. My son digs him, but my daughter ADORES him. She cant get enough. She keeps telling me that the Bakersfield concert was the best night of her life.

My mom went to his concert about a month ago (her first) and she said (I'm paraphrasing), "You know, I never really understood why you liked Prince as much as you do. I mean, up until I saw the concert, I just thought of him as another great entertainer, but now I can see he's so much more than that. He really knows how to put on a show, and you can see that he really cares that the audience is taken care of and is happy throughout the show. I never really had much respect for him before -- yes, I like many of his songs -- but now I respect him more than any other performers I've known." My mom's been a huge fan of Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, etc. She told me that Prince outclasses them all.
And that's the truth! edit: before this, my mom took me to see Purple Rain when I was 14, Under the Cherry Moon when I was 16, and then came with me to Sign O' The Times when I was 17. She loves "The Little Red Corvette" video -- she watches it all the way thru whenever it comes on -- she loves Dez!! Prince's jeans, and the way he dances in the video. oh, and let me tell you about my brother (3 yrs older) -- he gave me hell for being a Prince fan from the time I was 12 years old until recently. He only ever liked "Little Red Corvette" and "Let's Go Crazy" -- nothing else. What changed him was his guitar friends telling him how great a guitarist Prince is, and my brother's wife (also a Prince fan) playing all the unreleased songs. I think what sealed it (my brother finally respecting Prince) was the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame performance, the opening and especially the 3-minute guitar solo. My brother told me, "Damn, Prince must be the best guitar player alive!!" His mouth was to the floor! [This message was edited Mon Apr 26 22:20:47 2004 by Jasziah]
