I don't reckon Prince has much of a chance really.

People's ears are full of plastic earwax these days...nothing but crap permeating the radio. Even Outkast's "Roses" is shit. It's the worst song off their album, yet lo and behold people dig it just cause they're the guys who did Hey Ya. I love Outkast and they're not really the main problem, but Prince just doesn't stand a chance. This album will fall into obscurity just like the rest; even though I love the album myself, people just don't care about Prince.

Prince has had his time in the mainstream pop charts.

He's crafted a place in the history and evolution of pop music, and that place will always be there, regardless of his output in the future.

I guess like every other older artist he'll have his 'comebacks' (like now) and such, it's the natural evolution of pop music artists.

As for Rap (hip-hop/"urban") being "hot" right now - it's just what's receiving the most promotional backing. It's music for school children to feel rebelious with.

It's filtered down to the kids, like all things do, and become commercialised and over-saturized, ready for the next generation of kids and record companies to jump on the next band-wagon and commercialise/profiteer that.

I don't dislike rap, and it will always be around from now on, but it's popularity will fade and rise and so on just like all music genres. In fact, if it is at it's most popular now, that must only mean it is at the crest of a wave and there's only downwards to go!

I do get tired of the overused macho image of rappers covered in gold, stomping the stage backed by half-dressed lovelies going on about how great they are. If anything, it is this repetitiveness in performance that will eventually doom rap.

I do love Eminem's humour in his lyrics and videos - I can't imagine most rappers dressing up as a girl! It's that sort of inventiveness that rap needs to maintain it's popularity, I reckon.

i dont know i see a lot of new rap albums debuting lower and lower on the album chart's these days and they are only popular on the singles charts because rock & Pop acts dont release retail singles and rap acts do most of the time therefore getting a higher chart placing than radio airplay only singles
Check it out ...Shiny Toy Guns R gonna blowup VERY soon and bring melody back to music..you heard it here 1st! http://www.myspacecomment...theone.mp3

I agree with this thread. I think P's time as a mainstream artist is over. But that's not a bad thing. Unlike most vets [even Janet Jackson] Prince understands that there's an audience out there who he will not capture no matter how good the albums are and no matter what he does. Just like one DJ said on a hip-hop station: P just doesn't fit our format. It's not really the DJ's fault because if you hear what they are saying, they really respect P and like him. They grew up during that time. However, they have to play what the execs and the market tell them to play.

I'm not so dillusional to think that P will outsell an Usher or a Mario Winans. Janet couldn't even do that. And please folks, these useless threads about who's better...Usher v. Prince...just because Usher is selling more is insane! It's just that these acts are marketed to the younger generation. The younger kids buy this type of music. It has little to nothing to do with talent. That's just how it is.

Now I am just hoping that P continues to do well on the tour. [Remember it's the Number 1 tour right now]. He'll do well on the charts. Maybe not #1, but he'll do well and he'll sell. And that's all we wanted in the first place, right. It's a little too unrealistic to expect P to move into the top spot. Who knows...maybe I'll eat my words, but it appears unlikely.

I agree sorta. I would put it this way though. Prince + Rap does not go together. Hip Hop in the meaning; a voice of a people; a means for social change; meaning artist like Badu, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill, The Last Poets, Gil Scott Heron, Dead Prez, Common etc. In that case Prince and Hip Hop go pretty well together, especially now ah days. Prince is speaking on 'old school', problems with 'society', empowerment, those are some things that are definitely Hip Hop relative. (Listen to the Chocolate Invasion) Opposed to Rap which consists of the following...

Rims (spinning/spinners 20" and above to be classified as a baller/player)
Platinum chains, teeth, watches and other jewlery with diamonds (Ice).
Women (hos, yamps, skeezers, tricks, bitches, chicks or ass!)
Vehicles (Suv's, luxury cars, sport cars, too many to name)
Throwbacks (I admit I have a few, but it isn't my whole damn wardrobe!)
Rims
Money in general
Platinum records (certified or not)
Did I say Rims?

It's sad acutally. There's a BIG difference between Hip Hop and Rap. Hip Hop speaks from the soul, Rap speaks mostly from the pocket, and it's an accurate representation of what the music industry is today disbelief

I'm done bitchin'
