I really thing 99% of all Prince covers are off?? or just suck??

I think the worst is "The beautiful ones" by Mariah Carey is the WORST ( major released cover of a prince song)

*** BUT I guess the best one is : TLC's "If I was your girlfriend"

I really like a cover of irresistable bitch, by Trik Turner. I'm sure tons of you will disagree with me, saying "ain't nothing like the real thang" and stuff like that, but I find it well done.

PS. Whatcha all think of the new site? I wish the news posts were presented in the same way as before, or are they, and I just can't find them? Like when I clicked other news, About a billion celebration tour dates postings popped up, rather than having each individual story show up on one easy to see screen. I dunno, I guess I just really liked the old prince site's organization. Although I do enjoy the topics section. Quite often in the past I wanted to ask a question, or get some opinions, but knew it wouldn't register as news.

Well, I have about 600 different Prince covers in my collection, and I must tell you the bad ones outnumber the good ones.
There are actually some really good covers by Bob Belden (He has done 2 full Cd's of Prince covers, but "PrinceJazz" is by far the most original one. Herbie Hancock has covered Thieves In The Temple (there is a 17-minute live version). Other good ones:
- Alica Keys - How Come U Don't Call Me
- Arcwelder - Sign O The Times
- Derailers - Raspberry Beret (very original)
- Jimmy Scott - Nothing Compares 2 U
- Jonny Lang - I Am
- Mitch Ryder - When U Were Mine
- Ole Friis - Sometimes It Snows In April
- Peter Mulvey - Sign O The Times
- Kazda - Sign O The Times
- Sanne Salomonson - Sometimes It Snows In April
- Scott Holt - Five Women
- The Recliners - When Doves Cry (Doors feel)
If you think you have any covers that I don't have yet, drop me a line! If you want some of mine, the same!

One that comes to mind is D'angelo's version of "She's always in my hair"...even though its probably my favorite song of Prince's...D did a good job of it. Most covers of Prince's suck in comparision. Just leave the stuff alone!!

David Byrne's live cover of "The Future" is quite a good cover.

Keep in mind, it's a live performance and the song is quite different from Prince's version. So don't download it expecting 2 hear an exact match 2 the batman song.

But it's a cool track! It totally grows on U.

Cindy Lauper's version of "When U Were Mine" is really good IMHO. It just sounds good in that Cyndi Lauper voice.

Of course Sinead's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" and Melisa Morgan's version of "Do Me Baby".

Which I happen to hear before Prince's orignal. smile

I have 2 go with D'Angelo's SAIMH. When it was played for me over the phone I knew it was hot. Maybe it's just that there are really no good comparison's to make!

Essence

Chaka Khan-I Feel For You
D'Angelo-SAIMH

and... Ice T-Head lol

Can't think of many others I dig in their own right, it's usually just because I dig the song regardless.

Evan Rogers version of Private Joy is better than the original. That song should always have been a single.

Chaka Khan - I Feel For You...sorry but it's better than the original.

TLC - If I Was Your Girlfirend.

D'angelo - She's Always In My Hair

Absolute worst is The Beautiful One's by Mirah Crappy and Private Joy by Latoya Jackson...bulldozer treatment!

[pre:1:3fc79e2263]Aside from Chaka's version of "I Feel For You" the only other credible cover of a Prince song I've heard is Ani DiFranco's live version of "When You Were Mine."

I think it's basically because they don't attempt to make carbon copy updated versions, and instead make them distinctly different than the originals.
