Goldnigga

I've been listening to Goldnigga a lot recently and its really grown on me... its a spectacularly funky album!
And there are loads of bits I'm hearing now that I'd never noticed before... like all the quietish vocals on Black MF with references to Deliverance and lines like "the only place for a coon is up a tree" (or something)
There are loads of bits of conversation hidden just under the surface of loads of the most upbeat tracks.. a funny conversation in Johnny with some girl going "Where's Prince?" "What do you mean where's Prince?" etc
I'm loving it. Its a sweet-talking fine-looking album.

I LOVE "GOLDNIGGA"!

I have played it to alot of 'hardcore' hiphop lovers and they love it! Very, very funky and yes funny to! I like the interludes as well!

I also rate Tony m as a rapper and he is very well suited on this album! On this site he is hated by virtually all with a passion unfortunately!

Thanku 4 reminding me about this album! Now I must play "johnny" and "Deuce and a quarter" very loud now!

I love the break in that song when you just hear the cymbal (or something) tapping out the beat very quietly before it all kicks off again. Genius.

"tell me, tell me, tell me what am i suppose 2 do
i never had another granny look like u
every time i see u, girl, my johnny get hard
harder than the handle on the rake in my yard
harder than the brownstone brick on my house
if i ever, ever, ever get u into my mouth
i'll drink u like a 40 in an alcoholic's hand

GUESS WHO'S KNOCKING later got pulled after word from Paul McCartney's people apparantly

It wasn't due to "a word from Paul Mc Cartney's people" at all.

In fact, it's highly unlikely that Mc Cartney or his organisation are even aware of Goldnigga's existence to this day, such a low key project it was to begin with and certainly not one that was ever going to set the charts on fire.

The fact is Prince eventually made a conscious decision to pull the track after deciding it sounded too similar to a Mc Cartney tune ("Let 'Em In").

That's just what I read somewhere I didn't say it was a 'fact' that's why I said 'apparantly'

Thanks for the facts lad confused

So there are definitely 2 versions of this album floating around, despite it being such a low print run (i am assuming!)...
How odd.

I presume the first run was relatively small.

It was originally taken across Europe and sometimes sold at concerts on the Act II tour.

Some people picked up a copy from the NPG stores and some people have reported purchasing an original copy through 1-800NEWFUNK before the release of Crystal Ball.

Subsequent runs without 'Guess Who's Knocking?' have been sold through the NPG stores, from Paisley Park itself and via the website.

I presume the 6 track CD single for '2Gether' was also only made available through similar channels?

Yup, both versions of the album were pressed up in limited quantities. Obviously the original
pressing which included "Guess Who's Knockin" is now VERY rare indeed, and fetches quite a
price when it does surface. Most of the original pressings were sold through during the 'Act 1&2'
tours, with very few left over for sale through the NPG shops and mail order service. The second
pressing was widely available through the shops and mail order for a year or so before they
ran out. The same goes for the '2gether' CD maxi single.

NPG - GOLDNIGGA

1. Goldnigga pt.1 (3:12)
2. Guess Who's Knockin' (3:24) (first pressing only)
3. Oilcan (0:42)
4. segue (0:15)
5. Deuce & A Quarter (3:18)
6. segue (0:21)
7. Black M.F. In The House (5:08)
8. Goldnigga pt.2 (2:51)
9. Goldie's Parade (2:22)
10. segue (0:35)
11. 2gether (5:31)
12. segue (0:45)
13. Call The Law (4:16)
14. Johnny (10:19)
15. segue (1:13)
16. Goldnigga pt.3 (2:37)

NPG - 2GETHER

1. Album Mix (5:34)
2. 12 Inch Mix (6:53)
3. Interview (4:21)
4. Enlightenment (5:19)
5. Jeep Mix (5:35)
6. Instrumental (5:39)

Believe it or not, I recall this album being sold on some of the Jam of the Year tour stops. I think I bought it through 1800 NewFunk several years ago along with the Space and Come On maxi-singles. I didn't like Goldnigga all that much apart from 3 or 4 of the tracks, and actually gave it away during a bootleg trade. Now I wish I hadn't. I'd love to hear it again (I have most of the tracks, but I can't find Deuce and a Quarter or Black MF anywhere- and mostly I want to play them in the album configuration)....
