Musicology is Prince's Purple Rain, will he pull an ATWIAD for the next album?

For all intents and purposes, Musicology is doing for Prince what Purple Rain did for him in the 80's. It is bursting him back on he scene. Prince is now gaining some serious mass appeal, only to increase over the coming months for sure.

I for one have always loved Around The World In A Day, but it was definitely not what people were expecting after Purple Rain.

Will the next album be what HE wants to do, instead of what the public wants or is expecting? Or will he try hard to make his followup album have mass appeal to keep the Prince mania going strong?

Tough question, what do ya'll think?

Peace

i feel like he'll go off an whole new direction like he always does..which is why he is so great! in my opinion he's seen how much people appreicate his guitar work and he'll make a more rock type album...but we'll just have to wait and see

Roadhouse Garden would do that forsure.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I pray he drops a ROCK album next ... and fast.
It was the guitar that drew the masses back to the muse. The guitar solo at the Grammy's and the kick-azz guitar at the Rock and Roll Hall of Frame.

Rock album please !!

ive wondered this myself. personally if this whole cd thing is working out, whats to stop him not working with a major label for the next tour? i mean, he'll make enough money this year (musicology seems to be selling very well anyway, i imagine he has generous royalty rates, hes supposedly in talks with WB about the masters, his films are being released on dvd this year, call my name is taking off on radio) to fund it for his next tour.

if he doesnt play the hits he'll need a very strong follow up cos it will be harder for him to hold the attention of 12,000 people if he's not playing "hits" and the biggest cheers of the night are for musicology and call my name.

the good thing is now his name is back in the limelight and musicology has already proved a success, he can probably walk to any major label now, and that surely means distribution will be much easier if he doesnt work with sony again.

as for musical direction. nothing would surprise me (unless he releases another jazz instrumental) really. he might try consolidate his position with another commercial album but the few average reviews hes had now might increase if it seems like he's re-treading ground so quickly.

lets not forget the whole wendy lisa cd that might be coming out. the thing with that is, while it might completely bring princes revitalisation thats been happening since 2000 to the max, it might prompt the more cynical reviewers (of which loads love to bang on about prince) to say that after the "Looking back" of musicology he then goes back to the people who were with him in his best period.

i mean one reviewer for musicology even said re: sheila e playing shaker "its basically a revolution reunion". needless to say they didnt like the album but if he can talk shit like that...

personally i think it will be another commercial style album, but different enough that it doesnt sound like musicology part 2. perhaps like the difference between D&P and symbol? both commercial, but they have their own album sound. anyway, rant over! smile

Prince will do whatever Prince feels like. He always has, don't see nothing changing.
