azz kissiin Mofos lol

Some folks bought it again to get the video that is on the enhanced CD, as well as the liner notes and packaging (the one given away at shows is a promo in a plain sleeve). This doesn't make them "azz kissers" (what the hell is an 'azz' anyway?). Just means they wanted the extras that were on the retail version.

Yes, I do believe Prince was counting on this as a strategy. As far back as the "Emancipation" days Prince has mentioned in interviews that he was looking at the idea of having a new cd on every seat in the venue and incorporating the cost of the cd into the Price of the ticket. This is also why I believe Sony/Columbia records had no problem with Prince using this method. Why? Because I suspect that Sony/Columbia received their fair share of the cd cost that was built into the ticket price... much the same as they would've received if the cd was sold in a retail outlet. So no, this is not a new idea at all for Prince. Seems he was just waiting for the right time.

Also, Prince mentioned something to the affect of selling the equivalent of 400,000 cds just through concerts and that if that happens "Norah Jones had better watch out" referring to her high sales debut of her recent album. So I absolutely believe this was all part of the plan for Prince.

So Far, So Pleased...
U are so right. I read it in the 94 Vibe mag. interview that this was something that he wanted to do. Very innovative guy don't u think?

Yes, he's been talking about doing this for a very long time. He first mentioned it in the Vibe article, but he's tossed around this idea since the 80s. He did give away promo tapes at certain shows in the past ("The Versace Experience: Prelude To Gold" was given out at Gianni Versace's shows in 1994 and 1995, and the "Slave/New World" promo cassette was handed out at Paisley Park gigs in 1996). This is the next logical step.

Well fuck, i think Sony must have something going on with Billboard.

Obviously i'm pleased for Prince because he'll have a big-selling record for all to see for the first time in ages, but I think Billboard have set a stupid fucking precedent by doing this. So now we look forward to inflated prices from every damn artist to include a CD which the fans may well have bought anyway so they can sing along to the songs at the concert. confused

Well, I think ticket prices are so ridiculously inflated as it is, that it hardly matters. Heck, they SHOULD throw in a CD to somewhat justify the price. Actually, the tickets for this tour are actually cheaper than the last several tours he's done. Blondie's tickets are also suppossed to be moderately priced, and they are including the CD. Hopefully, THIS will be the precedent, and not even more jacked-up prices (heck, Madonna should not only give away CDs for the price of her shows, she should go out in the audience and give every audience member a lap dance! No reason for tickets to cost that much!)

I agree. I don't think giveaway CDs are to blame for inflated ticket prices. It isn't even really the artists I don't think. Prince just played our big new arena here in Omaha (The Qwest Center) and floor tix were $77 with the CD. Van Hagar is coming and their floor tix are $100 and NO CD. Nothing. They don't even have a new album out!!

Some if it is the artists. KISS sold "Platinum" tickets last year for $1000. People will pay what they will pay and that's how the free market works.

But also we have huge facilities that we don't really need that are tax-subsidized money pits. We have a perfectly good civic arena 5 blocks from the Qwest Center. But in the rush to have the "biggest" and the "newest" some people decided to build this new facility and EVERY show in it has been high priced. Coincidence? I don't think so. They have to pay for it on the 25 nights a month it sits empty after all.

Not to mention the old Civic sitting there empty as well.

I think the new venues all over are a big part of the problem.

Completely agree. I'm happy that an artist like Prince is including a CD, as its a nice, added bonus (also, it obviously helps him out, and gets him back on the chart). A win-win, if you ask me.

I totally hear you on the whole "new arena" thing. Seems like every time I turn around a new "bigger and better" arena is being built. Heck, just look at San Antonio: they just opened the SBC Center last year, but the Alamodome isn't even that old. Now, I understand that the Dome wasn't originally suppossed to be for basketball, but now it just sits there, with the occasional convention, home show or cheerleading competition in it. The Dome was built to attract a football team, but now its considered too "outdated" for that (that's another thing, how come all these arenas are obsolete after a decade?) There is a real culture of excess going on here, and the people who lose are the fans, whether it be those of sport teams or musical acts.

This new technique will only apply, and be successful, to the A list artists who can sell out 20,000 seat venues on mulitple dates.. Prince, the Rolling Stones, Springsteen, and the like will benefit, while the "flava of the months" won't.

Excellent point...
Because there are VERY few people that can demand the prices and draw the crowd...

Many will try but few will succeed...
whoever's callin' can't be as cute as you...right then and there i knew i was through...

Yes, Vinny EWM thinks Prince is sending people out to the stores to buy the cd's and forcing people to buy concert tickets.

Of course he will have no response to your comment about the sneaky crap that record companies do to inflate sales.

Sorry, I didn't reallize we were shifting gears here.
