My 11 year old daughter was asked a silly about Prince. My 6th grade daughter came home and told me, that after telling her friend she liked Prince the friend asked her "why?" My daughter explained that her dad (me) hipped her to the funk. Her 12 year old friend then took it upon herself to ask her if I was gay?
Now, my question is: Why do people think it is a criteria to be gay in order to listen to Prince? Anybody else get this kind of treatment, or is it just me? I have been poked at my whole life, well since '84, that I was gay just cause I liked Prince and I don't get it. I always (in the past) ended up explaining you don't have to be gay to appreciate good music. I guess I am just the oddball, because Prince never came off as gay to me. Not with all those fine women he always had around him. As far as his clothes and make-up, he's just a rock star playing the rock star role. I know quite a few men who are Prince fans and not gay. Now this stigma is being passed down to another generation and I think it's kinda sad actually. Lovesexy Funkateer

Now this stigma is being passed down to another generation and I think it's kinda sad actually. I am a 35 year old, conservative white male working in the construction industry. This is my 21st year as a Prince Fan. As I am going to Tampa and Jax for concerts this week (clearly taking some time off) I have had shocked looks and just plain ignorant comments made about me, Prince and my "obsession" in general. No one who hasn't known me for more than 5 years can believe it. I just chalk it up to ignorance. Few people who are not into Prince ever take the time to really understand that its about the music and the talent. And, when they ask me if I'm gay, I just smile and say, "You're a bright one, aren't you?" Make me feel tiny if it makes you feel tall, but there's always someone cooler than you. - Ben Folds

it's because they're 6th graders.
as for the adults who ask that question, they're just idiots. If they were to actually listen to prince's songs instead of just looking at the impeccable make up, they would realize that sexuality is not determined by looks or muscial taste alone.

I agree, LoveSexy...it's sad.
There are MANY more straight men out there who would LOVE Prince's music if they didn't think that everyone would call them a fag for buying one of his albums. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I was thinking about this last week. I've had people ask me those kind of questions and I'm always amazed by them. You can see the ignorance in people with those kind of questions. It used to bother me, now I brush it off cause people will think what they want whether you explain it to them or not. I realized that I'm more secure in being a Prince fan than I ever thought I was thanks to all of the stares and questions. Plus, they act as if one's choice in music determines one's sexuality. Like a gay person can't listen to hip-hop or rock. How stupid is that? I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'd say it's a criteria to be an open minded individual in order to listen to Prince and really "get it". The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I DIDN'T HEAR THE ANSWER No I am not. I have 4 children and an ex-girlfriend with whom I share custody. well, let me tell you... I have a friend who was once married, 2 kids... He's gay, so I don't see the point of your answer to support your theory about your sexuality. (kids, EX-girlfriend...- and I doulsn't care less for that) Besides, all of you, cut the crap. I'm not saying that being straight and liking Prince is just impossible. There are many around too, who really can see his talent and vibe. But you must admit all the androgenous image Prince had in the 80's and even in the 90's. Pics and Lyrics. (don't need to quout lyrics, do I?) He's not in the typical "macho man" image that others tried and have tried to show, sell... Prince is not gay (at least I never slept with him in his most ambiguous times, and I haven't personally met any man who did- that's the only evidence I can count on). I don't know if he is/was or had any bisexual experience (NOT OF OUR BUSINESS ANYWAY) I know the man got married and stuff, but... You can deny what he was. So people who relate Prince to being Gay or "ambiguous" are just FAIR. Peace "America is a continent..."

Yeah, to an extent I can understand why young kids would react that way; they have youth and ignorance as an excuse (not that all young kids do with this type of thing). But there are adults who just can't get past a performer's image to even hear the music, much less listen to it. Their loss. In the arts if everyone disregarded those who don't have a traditional, status quo image you're missing out on a whole lot of great art. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I see what you're saying Lovesexyis the1, but these people are the same people who think that he still goes by and the only album he's ever made is Purple Rain. I've been a fan since 1979 and went through Elementary, Jr High and High School hearing comments from time to time but not too much. I used to have my locker full of Prince and my notebook was full of pictures too. I did get one note in my locker once "Prince is Gay and so are you" but I thought it was funny because this brave person didn't say it to my face. I always used to tell people "let's see pictures of the women you've laid and we'll compare them to this "gay boy" and see if you'd trade." The only part I disagree with is "he's just a rock star playing the rock star role". Anyone who knows Prince well knows that he's not playing or trying to be anything, he's who we see 24/7. Ask people who are around him the most, it's no role he's playing, it's just Prince. It is sad that young kids are taught labels so early off but I think for the most part they're just imitating their atmosphere [This message was edited Sat Apr 24 13:25:19 2004 by EverlastingNow]

with homosexuality being somewhat of a more acceptable lifestyle today (except in religious and govt circles)I'm surprised little KIDS (who pay attention to pop culture, which embraces homosexuality) make a big deal out of it. but its like everlastingnow said, kids imitate their atmosphere (at least younger children do; when they become teenagers its all about rebellion). The Org is the short yellow bus of the Prince Internet fan community.

Prince's music is very feminine... so is his look... and manner... and attitude..... but its not gay.... it seems straight up - female! He must be a lesbian. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
