Musicology-Has prince changed? [b]On a ton of these forums people are saying either that think Prince has changed his musical way, or they love his new album. But I think a true Prince fan knows the "soul" in his music, weather it be the song "sister"-lol, or "cream" or "a million days". I have to say Ill be a little disappointed if Prince stops doing the good 'ol funky music we all love, but the soul will always be there. I think that to be a true prince fan this new album just shows how much you can respect him that hes willing to let more of own stylings out... "Too much freedom can lead to the soul's decay"

Changed for the worse. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

taken from another message board: I'm trying to think of any artist who had the same edge, fire, etc. when he is in his 40s...as he did in his early 20's..
I totally understand if one wants to judge Prince on his past catalouge...but I think folks are using a standard that isn't applied to anyone else... I just don't see it as being practical to compare Musicology to say...dirty mind. other then the fact that there is a 20 year time span...I don't see any artist who are held to the same standards 20 years apart....I think it's kind of a given that the raunchy, rude boy Prince of 1983 is not the same as the 40 year old Musician he is today

I know, right? I don't know why some folks still expect certain things from him.

Prince always changes for the worse... like when Dirty MInd people thought he sold out with 1999 and Purple Rain, or got off track with PArade and Sign O the TImes (lots of people liked Nasty much better than SOTT as a poop I mean pop album)... or when he got all throwaway with BAtman...or all conventional pop with Diamond and Pearls... or wait a minute, when he lost his entire american black audience with Lovesexy.... or when he turned all religious and put out Rainbow Children.... or when he grew his hair out, cut it, stopped splitting, stopped cussing, denounced horns, used horns....he's always changing for the worse, damn!

His ideas toward music, the public, and "business" have changed (for the better). He has accepted that record labels offer some things that he wants, and knows how to negotiate.
It's just too bad that it took so long to come around. It's a shame that Emancipation, Rave, and TRC didn't get heard by the masses . . .

Let's not paint with such wide brushes, he never lost his entire Black audience. The American audience he lost due to Lovesexy wasn't only Black people. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Yes. With Mani in his life and freedom on a new label, I believe Prince has changed for the better FOR HIMSELF. Whether you like the results is down to your personal taste, but I think what we are seeing FOR THE FIRST TIME on a lot of these songs is THE REAL PRINCE. He's learnt the quality of sincerity as he's gotten older and now it's truly coming to light.
Sound wishy-washy? Listen to "My Name Is Prince" and compare it with something like "A Million Days" or "Reflection" or "On the Couch" and tell me he hasn't gotten better with age!

okay, He lost his white new wave audience with sign o the times.... they rolled their eyes at track three and put on new order....
(I'm being kind of sarcastic with all this.... these observations or supposed patterns are meaningless in the big picture of the course of his career.) Supernova said: ufoclub said: or wait a minute, when he lost his entire american black audience with Lovesexy....
