The Chocolate Invasion kicks Musicology's Ass! I can't beleive it. I mean, I've heard most of the songs on 'Chocolate Invasion' from the NPGMC. But then I decided to order it and listen to the songs as a complete album as compared to various outtakes...and I honestly think that Chocolate Invasion is a better album than Musicology. And I like Musicology. But I really am feeling "When I Lay My Hands on You", "Supercute", "High", and "Underneath the Cream". These songs are som much more danceable than Musicology. I dig Musicology, don't get me wrong, but I think the Chocolate Invasion should have been his comeback album compared to Musicology. Does anyone agree with me? Or am I just talking silly?

sorry pal, but i don't agree with u, musicology is far better than tci, "high" is such a weak song from prince, one of his worst in recent years...it makes "life o the party" sound great and it isn't. musicology is stronger and i think most fans would agree with that.

-phunk I tend to agree with you. what I found is most people on this board that really enjoy Prince's pop and rock songs don't like Chocolate Invasion even this new version. I actually think that your favorite songs on the disc are its weakest but thats just my opinion. VaVoom, Judas Smile and Sexme/Sexmenot are hit records...PERIOD and it shocks me that he wouldn't include edited versions of Judas & Sexme (minus the mindless rapping parts...he just doesn't rap well) and VaVoom (which makes Cinnamon Girl sound silly) on Musicology Anyhow as a complete disc I would tend to agree with you. I think the Chocaolate Invasion is at least as strong as Musicology [This message was edited Tue Apr 13 16:23:58 2004 by Alexandernvrmind] Dance... Let me see you dance

Judas smile is worth the price alone! Can't enough of that!
Musicology is for the casual fans. Chocolate invasion and Slaughterhouse is for the following fans IMO. I played them both for my friend, who's a Prince fan...but semi jaded by the output from the last few years (except for TRC). He liked Musicology and LOVED Chocolate invasion. Would not say it's better than Musicology, but I like it better. Prince gonna git U high! Christian Zombie Vampires

Agree-my fiance is a so-so casual Prince fan-she loves Musicology, but thinks the The Chocolate Invasion is kinda weak and silly. "New Power slide...."

ok, ok....maybe I should clarify why I dig Chocolate Invasion so much....for the beats...the non-stop hitting beats...i mean, you got high, supercute, vavoom, judas, sex me baby--maybe y'all don't have a good stereo system to really play it loud and clear, but these tracks BUMP! Or maybe y'all were like me and didn't get it the first 5 times you heard the album. But keep listening. It will grow on you faster and harder than Musicology will. In my opinion, Musicology is an album where you like from the beginning, and get tired of it quickly, whereas Chocolate Invasion is an album that doesn't grab you so tightly at first, but soon you'll can't get enough of it...I can't believe y'all aren't feeling it like me. Now the one thing I don't like about Chocolate Invasion is the lyrics--too basic, not deep enough, very predictable. Musicology definitely wins in the lyric category, but I don't listen to albums for their lyrics, I listen for the music. Just one question, for those that don't dig Chocolate Invasion, have you listened to it in the proper sequence, or are you basing your judgments on the various outtakes you would get once a month over a year ago?

-phunk I agree that it flows like an album or at least it was remixed in that way. But really it's just a different album than Musicology. I think Musicology is more solid an album in flow and feel. TCI feels more compilation like...but it works IMO. I wish I could get an actual CD of it myself. Lyrically, I thought for not using any swear words, like he's doing now, he does a good job at making the songs sexy and strange...actually quite contrary to a thread I read on this topic. When I lay my hands on u, and sex me, sex me not, underneath the cream, fit in that category. When I heard Judas Smile for the first time I was floored. This is the type of direction I appreciate from Prince. I think that most may feel he just took the best songs released on the club and made 2 compilations and called them whatever. Like the Crystall Ball, TCI has a name that has nothing to do with what originally it was going to be which was most everything released thru the club on 7 CD's. Many here have these songs and so it may not seem like a complete album to them. I dunno, mostly what I have read is differences in what was released before as to what is released now and omissions of what is still left to be released...and not too much discussion on the actual songs...or the arrangement that he put them in. That could be because the discussion has already passed when the songs were released. Christian Zombie Vampires

-phunk Okay, so here's my response as you requested in your orgnote: Don't get me wrong, I really, really LIKE The Chocolate Invasion. I agree the beats are bangin' and I do have a good stereo with LARGE speakers and I play it LOUD. However, there are a two songs on this "album" which sincerely make me cringe, because, I think we have to face it folks, Prince drops a turd every once and a while due to the sheer magnitude of his output. And the two tracks I'm talking about are "Underneath the Cream" and "High". I mean, let's start with the latter. "Prince gonna get you high"? What is this shit? It's like a fuckin advertisement, not a song and has the kind of manufactured beat and feel that only a cheese grater could love. Sure it has some OKAY moments, I don't mind the use of the word hooligan, for example, but overall...FAECES. A turd. On to "Underneath the Cream" then. Prince, two words: stop rapping. The talking/rapping part in this song seriously is vomitrocious. I think of all his many talents, his rap ability is his weakest...check also "The Sun, Moon and Stars" off Rave for a vomit-inducing comparison. To top things off, he's taken the feel of one of his greatest songs, "Pink Cashmere" and RUINED it in a second-rate remake. The only redeeming feature about this song is the imagery of "can't stop thinking about your thighs"....that's where it ends, though. Now, on to a much better album, Musicology. In my opinion, this album has ZERO weak tracks. I love every minute of it, although I thought, contrary to what you said Phunk, that it was a grower and was not an immediately pleasing album. There were standouts from the start of course, but as an album, it grew into a cohesive whole with successive listens. This is an effect that didn't occur for me with TCI and mainly because of the two weak tracks I have mentioned. In short, Musicology is a REAL Prince album, worthy of the best of his back catalogue - TCI on the other hand, while containing some choice nuggets, also contains two prime turds which represent the worst Prince has to offer. Chocolate Invasion aint half the record that musicology is..."supercute" and "vavoom" are throwaways, pleasant at first but annoying and shallow on repeat listens. "judas smile" and "high" are uninspired and uninspiring lazy dance tracks laced with a sound that's not fresh. "sexme" is definitely a cut above "judas smile" and "high" but again the song never really breaks free from being a throwaway dance song. ego tripping out

Just listened to "High" again - something I do now again - just to check whether I've missed something. Surely it must really be a clever and subtle Prince song disguised as a commercial summery dance thing? Nope - it's still just shite. Prince - why d'ya do it man????? Why d'ya write High????? Northside, Vavoom, Underneath the Cream, My Medallion, Supercute, Radical Man, Daisy Chain, SmGrove .. these 8 songs alone kick the living shit outa Musicology's weak ass.
While the lead track "Musicology is nice but "TEPID" at best.. the rest of the Musicology album is... 1. ((Totally Boring..)). 2. ((Heard it before..)) 3. ((Lyrically Weak)) 4, ((The grooves are Stale)) Two 1/2 years later i'm still playing those 8 gems from 2001.. in the car, at a jam, when its got to be funky. With the Rainbowchildren & the Audio shows.. wow what hard fun year 2001 was to follow up. If Musicology is an old school theme album... there's plenty better old school albums from James Brown, Digital Underground, Funkadelic, Motown on the shelf.

-phunk Are you finished? Well, allow me to retort © 1994 Mirimax Films - Samuel Jackson in Pulp Fiction The only track that is just slammin' IMHO, is Judas Smile. Everything else on this "album" sounds just like what Prince did: threw it together and called it a compilation and gave it a title two seconds before it was released. The tracks are nice for what they are, but I don't hear any craft put into it much like Rave and New Power Soul. Realizing it's a matter of personal preference, I can see why you dig it because it makes your system "bump". But that is one of the last reasons I listen to a Prince album. I was reading on another message board about how Prince's albums use to be exciting because they had so many "moments" (i.e. recording flaws that made the songs classic, musical transitions from hook to verse to bridge, etc) on them. Musicology has so many more of those "moments" than TCI. I don't think Musicology is an instant classic. But it's really solid. The collection of slickly overproduced music entitled 'The Chocolate Invasion' just doesn't do it for me.
