Five things to watch for at the Prince concert

By Leslie Gray Streeter, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 23, 2004

The opening night of Prince's Musicology tour, broadcast live from Los Angeles to the Regal Royal Palm Beach theater on March 29, was a masterful and massively funky festival of new jams and old gems. Five things to look out for at Sunday's Office Depot show:

1. He may have been aloof and cool on past tours, but the new Prince is smiley, sing-along friendly and seems genuinely gracious of all the fan adoration.

2. Like fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Sting, Prince is an immensely talented musician who surrounds himself with equally stupendous players, many of whom have their own albums. Sassy saxophonist Candy Dulfer is one of the newest fine additions to his New Power Generation.

3. He's still singing some sexy, sexy songs, but Prince, now a Jehovah's Witness, has edited some of the lyrics to reflect his new faith. Among the changes: "I'm your messiah" from I Would Die 4 U is now "He's your Messiah."

4. The set is likely to include at least two Prince-penned songs that were hits for other people: A groovy I Feel for You, recorded by Chaka Khan, and a heartbreakingly brilliant Nothing Compares 2 U, recorded by Sinead O'Connor.

5. Most artists throw in a cover song or two, but Prince's take on Sam and Dave's

Soul Man
, with zoot-suited keyboardist Chance Howard on vocals, is unexpected, joyous and just too good.
