THE FAMOUS LINN DRUM MACHINE

i dont know about you guys, but after hearing "what do you want me 2 do?"..this is the song that i have on repeat..that drum machine sound!.OMG.IT BE ROCKIN!....this is the one thing prince should not part with..i think of "pink cashmere" from the hits collection...cut in that same dress-blowing-in-the-summer breeze vibe..he is the master of the soft and loud..(how about that scream on endorphinmachine?)..prince knows the sound he wants...props to the linn drum machine! biggrin

Is that a Linn snare he's using as well? Like the same one found on the intro taps of "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" confuse

I would imagine now that a lot of the Linn sounds are nothing more than triggered samples - maybe these are created 1st on the LM1, maybe not - Im not sure. I know there r a few peeps here who would know (I cant remember their name, but I know of at least one musically-inclined orger who has one).

Im sure maybe he dusts it off once in awhile ('Silicon' 4 example - that sounded FAB!)
thumbs up!

If you mean the snare in "What Do U Want Me 2 Do" than yes, that's a "high" snare on the Linn, a little tweaked though, a bit higher...

It's all about the "SMACK" sound that Prince used on all 80's hits.Without it there's no signature sound. Cameo tried to copy his sound with "word up" and "candy" using the linn drum and specifically the "SMACK".

We all love to hear it. Lets hope he has sold enough tickets on the Musicology Tour to buy himself a newer one.

Really dig it when used with slower grooves (Think "If I Was Your Girlfriend") That is what makes "what do you want me 2 do" so cool. Slow groove with a jazzy feel. It's old school Prince meets new school Prince. I'd like to hear more of this sound on the next album.

Never seen 'em on eBay, but check some local or online music stores maybe they'll be able to find one for you...
I bought one years ago together with a Minimoog and an ARP Odyssey for about $2000 which is amazingly cheap...
However the Linn was defective so I had to pump about $500 into it just to get it fixed and it works like charm...
But the dude I bought it from said it could fetch about $3000 then if it wasn't defective, that was 1996...
I've seen one at display at a music fair in Germany about 2 years ago that was going for 4000 Euro's, that's about $4000, but that's only because it's a collector's item now, many music museum would love to get their hands on one of these...
It's a cool thing to have for just nostalgia's sake since all the Linn patches are incorporated in about every new synths on the market which are a lot cheaper than a Linn LM-1...

I got a LinnDrum its cool, I've used a LM1 before...I remember when I was at the first celebration they had it on display, and I programmed something on the LM1. I remember Takumi saying to me "You know how to use that anchor??"

He actually used the Linn Drum in Live situations (Revolution, Hit & Run, Parade Tour) cuz it had the drum triggers that Bobby Z would play. Also the sample rate on a LM1 is 28hz where the LinnDrum is a little bigger.
