Well . "Purple Rain" is a slam dunk ( though I've had a couple of people actually tell me that was a "fluke" ) , but I've hooked a few people with " The Question Of U " and "She's Always In My Hair," and the " prince " album ...

Just sit them down and let them watch a copy of FIRST AVE 8/3/83.

That will blow them away!

My 11 year old is starting to appreciate Prince after a couple of years of rolling her eyes when I'd play his music.

I think it started w/ "Style"

Then she'd ask me to play a song over in the car

Then I hear her singing "Paisley Park" as she was putzin around the house.

THEN, earlier this week I came home and found the lyrics to "Paisley Park" written out. She'd done it from memory because she was bored.

i've turned out a new fan - my daughter!

i put on "when you were mine" or "uptown" and she just starts groovin.

it's been more than 20 minutes, though. there was nine months of listening in the womb, then 10 months on the outside. not too shabby. music

when I was back home at Easter, Prince came up somehow when I was talking to my brother.

he said "he's alright, i guess."

eek

you could've knocked me over with a feather. i nearly died of a heart attack right there.

i said "what did you just say? wait, let me guess, some chick that you like is into him. or you've got some friend that's turned you on to him in 6 months, when i couldn't do it in 12 years."

all he would say is "well, i guess he was more revolutionary than i thought."

not very forthcoming, and i didn't push it, because that's good enough for me.

Don't give 'em the Black Album. My co-worker had been begging me to bring in TBA to listen to. He thought by "black" it was going to have a huge bass line in every song. Needless to say, he didn't like TBA, which was astonishing to me. How can a black man not like TBA??? Anyway, I explained to him that this album was conceived in the mid-80's, so you can't compare it to today's standards. He said the album wasn't funk-ladden. I was like "WTF." So, anyway, he complained that he should've sounded like "Musicology," which he likes because of the bass line and rhythm guitar.

Just thought it was interesting: he didn't like TBA, but he likes Musicology.... nuts

I usually turn people into Prince fans with the use of whips and billy clubs. Your way sounds like too much work. I don't have the time for that.

I may have turned my cousin out on Prince tonight with just a few tidbits from the past few weeks:

    - Showed her the RRHOF performance, but just the guitar solor on Gently Weeps so she wouldn't get antsy sitting through 3 songs (should have done SOTT instead, huh?)... she acknowledged it was "tight" but bolted before I could go further neutral

    - played "The Marrying Kind/If Eye Was the Man In Ur Life" as she stood there, waiting for me to finish mad couldn't tell if she was tapping her leg or having nervous twitches confused

    - MADE her sit down & listen to "Call My Name" in its entirety & went on about my business. When it was over she said (with a huge grin), "I REALLY like that one!" woot!

By the end of the night she wanted me to burn Musicology for her whofarted but I had a better solution - take my extra "free" copy biggrin One day she'll know the difference between MUSIC music & NOISE wall

Turned out any Prince fans lately? biggrin

I teach a high school mass media class and when we do our unit on rock and roll, I make my students select an influential artist and give a presentation to the class on the artist using research and audio/video clips.

I always model a presentation for them, and I ALWAYS use Prince (of course).

My goal is to get them to respect him, so I try to focus on his ability to function so well in so many different styles, thinking that this is the best way to appeal to the diverse tastes of my students.

It ALWAYS works.

I will DEFINITELY use the RRHOF tape next year, but I typically have them listen to:

"When Doves Cry" -- for a groundbreaking, popular single
"The Ride" -- for blues chops/guitar prowess (this one always impresses the punky rock kids)
"Human Body" -- for modern dance/electronic vibe
"The Work, Part 1" -- for the James/Sly influence and pure funk factor
