Entertainment Magazine Musicology Review Just got the mag in the mail today (free subscription)
Anyway, overall a B- Headline : Prince can still bring the funk, but David Brown's(the reviewer) heard it all before. Highlights from the article (dont feel like typing the whole thing) - ...that bar has fallen so low that it's tempting to hear the fat-free, melodic Musicology as a beacon of hope" - "...sounds as if Prince is less interested in fighting Mr. Man than in giving in to him." Overall he says that it sounds like things he's written before, and that it's kind of a bland record with a few treats. That basically goes along with what I've thought of the record so far, FWIW.

i can sort of agree with that sentiment. it is nothing new to long time prince fans; we've been there before. i just don't think this is supposed to be an experimental or broadening record. shit, when u2 reverted to their older sound with "all that you can't leave behind", critics couldn't get their tongues out of bono's ass...or, would he say arse? i loved that cd too, but it was no zooropa, achtung baby, passengers or pop. and, excluding achtung, they too were bashed for exploring new territory. the same is the history of prince. when he does different things he's told (by critics and fans) that he's meandering through a self serving sound. when he does something old and familiar, he's told he needs to come up with something new. well, which is it? i like both so it doesn't particularly matter to me. i could certainly do with more experimental sounds. a nice pop record is cool too since, after all, he IS a pop musician. in the end, i'm happy with what musicology turned out to be. hopefully, for thos eof you who aren't, he'll release something soon that you can dig too.
