G. Bridge - it HURTS to listen to it!! the sound quality is so horrible.... i tried to listen to it on my headphones today, and it was just painful.
It's a CRIME that the greatest musical catelogue of the past 25 years, with LEGENDARY albums like SOTT, PR, Parade, 1999 and others, sound like ABSOLUTE CRAP. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET REMASTERED VERSIONS????? sorry. Had to vent. | |

i've always found GB to be a step up from the sound quality on things like SOTT, etc.
but, it's still not great. there was a quantum leap in sound quality between GB and D&P (or probably more accurately, ). a little off-topic, i hope if/when they remaster that stuff that they only put HIS songs on one disc, and relegate the Tevin Campbell, Mavis Staples, Time, etc., tracks to the second disc. Since you mentioned the topic of SOTT's sound quality...I've always thought the sound quality on the compact disc was really poor. However, I thought the vinyl sounded tremendous. Did anybody else come to the same conclusion? I don't think any of Prince's WB material has been given the remaster/reissue treatment - if/when this does occur, I'd be very interested to hear what SOTT sounds like. I know that in the early days of CD production, quality could be quite erratic. In fact I remember comparing albums I'd purchased on disc to my old vinyl (talking heads and television are the bands I'm referring to specifically) and being absolutely convinced that the vinyl blew them away. I'm sure WB would get to it eventually, especially since Prince is selling records again!! "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

I'm so with you here, I hate that all my favourite Prince songs have to sound like garbage on cd. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

It's funny you all are talking about sound quality now. During my "Minneapolis Sound Celebration" I noticed the sound quality discrepancy, namely between SOTT and other albums that came out that year, like Wendy & Lisa's first album. What bothered me the most was not only the poor sound quality of SOTT, but also the cheesy, out-of-date keyboard sounds. And this was true with both the LP and CD. Albums like W&L and George Michael's Faith put SOTT to shame! The same goes for Batman and W&L's Fruit at the Bottom, both released in '89. While Prince was working to be more innovative with sampling (which still irritated me nearly as much as the sampling you heard on the radio), Wendy & Lisa were concerned with keeping their sound clean. and Diamonds & Pearls are two of my favorite albums, partly because the sound quality is so clean. It's amazing how much of a difference that makes. My LP of Prince's second album (which sounds almost digital) runs circles around my SOTT CD...
