Sorry Folks, Musicology is NOT good

I've been a diehard Prince fan for years. I look forward to every album with excitement. His music has been the soundtrack to my life, just like the rest of you. But after listening to Musicology, I have to say, I am shocked at how absolutely dull and uninspired it is.

Would I say this to Prince's face? No. I love the man for all he's done, and respect his talent immensely. Are there a couple of decent tracks on the album? Sure. The song Musicology is funky. But...

After several listenings, I can't believe he would release something so incredibly bland by his standards. There's not one track on the whole album that stands out or stands apart from anything he's ever done before. The slow jams sound just like every other slow jam he's made before. Every song has a similar sound to something he's done before, only he did it better the first time. There's not one tune that should make a greatest hits album, not one song that will be remembered 20 years from now. I put this in the same catagory as his "Old Friends For Sale" album that WB recently put out.

I realize it's all relative, and that many of you like this album. I for one thought that "The Rainbow Children" was fantastic and brilliant and completely inspired--his best work in years. I also surprised myself by becoming a fan of "New Power Soul", which I thought had some fantastic trax.

But "Musicology" -- it just doesn't deserve to be getting all these good reviews--it doesn't. Because it's not that good. Prince has done, and can do, much much better.

Thats a shame dude. sigh

I do kinda feel what yr saying, as I do partially agree with yr blandness opinion, cuz IMO there shoulda bin more and better solos in the album.

But im generally happy, i like the fact its hella funky and am quite satisfied widdit.
I hope it grows on ya. wink

One thing I will say...play it LOUD. I blasted it today on my stereo, and these tracks kick.
"A million Days" and "cinnamon Girl" really rock at high decibles.
The title track sounds damn good too!

It's a grower...most detractors around here end up eating their words after a few weeks. And it's totally better than either of those albums you mention, you're really in a TINY group of folks there.

I agree that it is a bland album. But then again, I don't like the Parade album, but really like the NewPowerSoul album, so what do I know?

listen to it 10x minimum

I was very unimpressed. Now...a month later I like it better than The Gold Experience.
it is SOLID from beginnning to end.

Now granted, this is a "pop" album. If you gravitate to P's more avante guard stuff this will not be for you. IMHO though I wanted something fun, something with hooks, something tight.

Musicology delivers.

Musicology is definetely one of those albums that open up in sections for most people. I've had the tracks for a couple of weeks and I wasn't too crazy at first. My friend didn't like it at all. Well, today, I got the CD and suddenly he's turning up the volume. No wonder, because the sound is much superior and the songs just soar one after the other -- I was shocked that even Life O the Party gets a bounce. That bass!

Musicology officially kicks ass as far as I'm concerned.

The Vault is far from dull. The Vault kicks a donkey's nuts through the fuckin' aural goal posts.

The thing that really annoys me about the album (other than I woulda loved to have heard a decent piano and guitar solo in there) is that Prince seems to be copying himself.

I know of 3 or 4 blatant occasions in the album which sound like he's simply copied hooks or sampled from his previous records (eg. like the beat in Shockadelica - the hook in Feel U Up, copied in I Like Funky Music.)

Im certain that the squeeky, high-pitched hook near the end of Musicology is taken straight from a song in Emancipation, or at the very least he's changed or added a note cuz it sounds pretty much identical.

And it bugs me to fuck, cuz theres no need 4 it.

I am soooo tempted to start a "Parade VS NewPowerSoul" thread just for you!

Imagine...

Kiss vs Come On
Sometimes it snows in April vs The One (not too gag inducing so far, but wait...)
Girls n Boys vs... Push it Up?
Mountains vs.. hmmm... Freaks on this side?
Anotherloverhole vs.. I like Funky Music?
Life can be so nice vs... hmmm She bed who or is that Shobedo (don't have the courage to look)
Under the cherry Moon vs Until you're in my arms again?
Christopher Tracy's Parade vs New Power Soul?

Right, In my opinion and I think are words that are seldom used on this site.

Ain't that the truth and it's unfortunate. So many people post things like what the person who started the post posted and they make it sound like it's the absolute truth and thank God it isn't. We have the right to say what we want but we need to repect others and the fact that everyone doesn't share the same view. Just my 2 cents.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Well everyone has their opinion but all I can say is I love this shit!!!! Now I did not like Rave. Actually I could use your review for how I felt about it. I always respected TRC but until very recently I did not like it. I loved NEWS instantly. But this album, Musicology is awesome. Now let me define that. I think that you are probably one of the more savy Prince fans. But you have to keep in mind this is a comeback album where as TRC and NEWS were not. Those albums were put out to bend genre's and our minds in the way that only Prince can. Musicology is Prince showing off. Just like Diamonds and Pearls he is showing us that he can be current and he can still write hits. I mean really you come to this site and see all the shit certain people talk about him. He has ignored it for awhile but for the sake of commercialism Musicology is exactly where it needs to be. Simple beats, melodies and most importantly simple hooks. This album shows me just how deep his brilliance really is. I mean this man is 45 and he can still make a very viable, strong, infectious Pop album. DAMN!!!!
A few weeks ago a orger and I wish I could remember his name. Wrote his review of this album and also gave us guide for how we should listen to it. Honestly if this was someone else's like Andre 3000 or whoever else is the beat of the week guy. People would still be creaming themselves over this records. Try to suspend belief and pretend the next time you listen to this that it is not Prince. I bet your standards for the record will not be so high.
If that still does not work then hey you just don't like the album and that is cool as well.
Peace
THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

I hear that!! lol If you're trying to say that NPS is better than Musicology, well then I lost you. Musicology is consciously derivative and while I understand your lack of enthusiasm, I'm not entirely sure that your really allowing yourself to hear this record in the way, from the perspective, that I think P. was hoping you would hear it from.
