Prince On Steve Harvey Radio Show

Was channel surfing this morning on the way to work and was surprised to hear Prince greeting Steve Harvey during his morning radio show. Lucked out since the station his show is broadcast on in Dallas is not one I normally listen to. I can't remember what all was said and can't quote verbatim, but this is the gist of the interview:

Prince & Wife backstage at the Essence Awards: Steve apologized for cursing in front of Manuella. Prince was amused and joked that was the reason he was doing the radio interview, because he knew the FCC would prevent Steve from cursing too much. Prince then asked Steve Harvey what he thought of the FCC cracking down on profanity, etc. Steve replied that he thought something needed to be done because of the 'anything goes' mentality of today's entertainment world. He also said that it was wrong that Janet Jackson's breast baring incident was getting most of the blame for the FCC crackdown and Prince agreed.

About younger artists giving Prince props for taking on the system: Steve asked if Prince was aware that a lot of rap and R&B artists give Prince credit for making them more savvy in dealing with the recording industry system. Prince replied he did indeed know and that he'd had convos with a few who said that he'd inspired them in that regard. Said he wasn't neccesarily against the music industry execs, just that he wanted them to have a better understanding of the needs of artists and where they were coming from. He also said that when he was battling Warner's, he experienced a lot of mental and physical stress.

About what he's trying to accomplish with 'Musicology': Prince reiterated the trying to school younger artists and fans on using real instruments in creating music. Also contrasted how song writers like Holland, Dozier, Holland, Stevie and Marvin Gaye started with a complete song and then crafted the music around that song rather than today's practice of starting with a loop or beat and creating a song from it. He says the emphasis is on dance and (paraphrasing)"that's great, but after a while dancing clouds the mind and diminishes the music and lyrics."

Steve Harvey quotes 'Adore': Recited twice the chorus of 'Adore' beginning with 'If God one day struck me blind' line, with lots of enthusiastic responses from his morning crew. Could barely hear Prince's response for all the noise. Prince also pressed a touch tone button on his phone a couple of times and kidded Steve about that being his way of bleeping Steve's expletives.

Steve missing out on appearing in 'Musicology' video: Steve expressed disappointment in not being able to be in the video because of scheduling conflict (I assume Prince asked him to make a cameo but that was never clarified). Prince responded that Steve's spirit was throughout the video. Steve also commented that his favorite line in 'Musicology' was 'don't you miss how music made you feel' and wished he had a dollar for everytime acquaintences said that.

About scrawling 'Slave' on his face: Paraphasing - "That made for interesting meetings with Warner Brothers execs. 'So what are you trying to say, Prince?'"

That's about all I can remember. The interview was great, Prince sounded wide awake and was really touched by all the love Steve & Crew showed him.

This was a rebroadcast from the media day on Monday. TheBeatLA.com usually posts Steve's interviews. As of yet they have not added Prince. I called to ask if they would add it. They said they plan on it. So it's just a matter of time.

Like I've been saying: it's a shame that more people don't get to se this side of Prince. He really does seem like a sweet and humble guy. Hopefully, we'll see more of that in the coming days and years...

[If God one day struck me blind, Prince's beauty I'll still see...and hear!]
