The biggest difference is that when I got my promo copy, they didn't ask for my phone number and they didn't try to make me subscribe to Sports Illustrated.

The official release - the one you buy in retail stores - contains the "Musicology" video, not to mention lyrics and pretty pictures.
The free disc - the one you get at the concert - is in a cardboard sleeve with no video, no lyrics, no credits, and no pretty pictures. I don't know about you, but I look at the free one as just that. It was a great way to preview the disc before it came out. It made me look forward to the release even more, despite the fact that I would have bought a CD anyway when they came out... and still plan to. | |

I still say that although I LOVE the idea of Prince giving away the album to concert-goers, I think he totally shot himself in the foot by not adding ANYthing to the official release.
I mean....the Musicology video? It's not like a few years ago, when you would never see a Prince video on TV - I mean, how many of us on here have STILL never seen the Come On video, for example? Shit, I had the Musicology video burned to my hard drive like 6 weeks ago. 
And GodDAMN the packaging sucks ass....the flap doesn't close and the booklet doesn't stay inside...how could it? There's nothing keeping it in there! No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.
