PRINCE'S GAY IMAGE?

There's promo poster's of Prince everywhere around London. "Back in the day" when Prince was at his best (late eighties) he was called a "batty man" by my school mates. Nearly 20 years on, I manage a bookstore and what do my collegues say after seeing Prince back in the media spotlight? "He looks gay", "Is he gay?".

What interests me is that Prince is aware that he's thought of as gay because there's a self refering line in the new album.."..thought he was gay". For most of his musical career he's been a player and a real ladies man. Ok, it's a sign of an integrated male personality that you can be in touch with and express your feminine but does Prince go too far? He's already gone on record to say "I'm straight" (truth album). Sexuality is an essentail part of ones identity. If Prince is straight, what does he think people will think of his not so masculine image? Ok, not that it matters, if you're comfortable with you're sexuality you can wear and look how you want. But for most of my fan-life I've heard these 'he's gay' comments, from homophobic teenagers to politically correct booksellers. The facts speak for themselves, when ordinary folk think Prince, they think gay.

Let me state that I'm not homophobic. But if there's a misinterpretation of image connected to sexuality, then Prince is considered more camp than cool, more gay than staright. Not that being a dandy and ultra feminine means you're gay (no stereotyping here). Till now I've not discussed this with other fans, but it seems non fans think of our Prince as more of a queen.
Do any other fans hear the gay comments and how do you react to them? Does it really matter?

Prince don't give a damn whether folks believe he's straight or not and what folks think of his feminine side.

C'mon. Prince has incorporated several "dual-alities" from day one. Life o' the Party is certainly not the first time Prince has acknowledged the "gay" comments. He couldn't have addressed it any more plainly than in "Controversy." In AnnaStesia, its the "Have you ever wanted to play with someone so much you'd take anyone boy or girl." He has always played both sides of his personality. The backward masking in Darling Nikki, an outright appeal for the Rapture at the back end of a sex song. Shit, even the symbol was an androgynous horn thing. This is nothing new. Part of Prince's musical genius to me is the way he blends sex and (G)od, straight and gay, boy and girl, and makes it all make sense. For years, he used it for publicity, then he moved on to explore the relationship of love and sex and spirituality.

I don't really think he gives a damn if people think he's gay.

In the Chris Rock interview he was asked how much of his persona was real and how much was not. P basically said that a lot of it is just "rock 'n' roll", but some of it is the true gemini that he is. Don't forget when P was growing up (in da 70's) people like David Bowie and Elton John were serious gender-bender rockers. They probably influenced his "rock 'n' roll" image. Also the pre-AIDS attitude about homosexuality wasn't the same as it is now.

Note: I am trying not to be judgemental one way or the other. I really don't care what anyone does in his personal life.

Well TBH, I don't really care if he's gay or straight. For me, that has nothing to do with the music. My own personal view of him is that he is a very sexy man. I mean, sexuallity and sensuallity just comes out every pore of his body!

When I hear comments from people who say he's gay, I disagree vehemently with them, but people are going to believe what they want to believe. I don't really care one way or the other.

Actually, let's not say he's bisexual, since there is literally zero evidence to support this.
I may not care that he's hetero and not gay, but I do care about facts and the truth.

Prince does not have a gay image at all and never has done, and nothing that man has ever done has been camp!

Compare him to alot of the boybands that are around and you'll soon differentiate and understand gay image!

What he has got is a very feminine image which is a totally different type of thing, and a self awareness of his sensual and sexual sides that are at a level that reach unimaginable heights compared to others. However Under all the make up, the lace the high heels, hipsters, crop tops and everything else that you would only associate with woman, he still portrays a rather masculine presence.

If every one had a similar attitude towards the way they dressed the world and the people in it would be alot more interesting.

Its not about rules of gender, this is for man, this is for woman. Its about you like it and you wanna wear it, then do so. Its not up to the norms of society to influence and even dictate whats acceptable to wear. And its nothing to do with what your interests are in the bedroom. Remember you actually end up taking your clothes off here so they become slightly irrelevant in the end anyway!

And definately not gay. Can't picture it at all. And not that I want to disclose too much of my own business but I consider myself Extremely qualified to confidently express my opinions!

Gay is the result of all the better and superior strengths and qualities that a straight woman has over a man, along with equally all the superior qualities and strengths that man has over a woman, come together in perfect harmony during the miracle of conception and child birth, to produce a superior being!!!!!

I think Prince would more than likely refer to himself as a metrosexual if he were to ever respond to this topic with an actual answer.
Strange, but I'm more comfortable around you naked.

I think Prince is a sum of all his influences (male and female) and he stays true to whatever he feels is artistically necessary. With someone like Prince, does expression end in the studio? No, for him, it almost undoubtedly encompasses his "shtick" and fashion. So, if devotion to his muse entails prancing around in women's clothes & tons of makeup, as he has done for most of his career, that's what he'll do. Only he knows whether that expression is artistic, sexual or both.

He spoke on Oprah of having a multiple personality condition and of being unsure of that other personality's gender. I'm way out of my element when it comes to psychology, but I'd venture that might have something to do with his longtime androgyny.

I thought that on the Tonight Show, Prince was fucking w/ Mel Gibson and his infamous hyperhomophobic personality...Prince kept gettin' all touchy-feely buddy-buddy with Mel, and ol' Mad Max kept on squirming and scooting over. If Prince did that consciously to mess with Mel, I think that is SO cool. Doesn't mean I think P's gay, though. Just that he "gets it" on some level.

READ THE NEW INTERVIEW in Entertainment weekly, prince talks about touching hands with a man, in very conservative light.... kind of backwards for someone who markets an androgenous appearance with feminine music... with femme moves too! But maybe he feels like that way he can seem cool to the conservative readers of that mainstream mag... but nobody conservative is gonna feel comfortable with a moon ear piece and lit up high heels.

Not suprised that this topic would pop up sooner or layda(in my duration of being here) As always esp. in my area & the kids ne1 udders the name 'Prince' 1st thing said is "Oh that gay mofo" & otha crucial stuff. IMO I neva seem Prince as 'gay' I just thought he wuza very creative person hadda very good imagination in style & mind(of course music). In things I've seen him in I neva seen him act fruity. Da man is a formal P-I-M-P! matta fact I use 2 always say "it takes a man 2 wear heels"(I'd say that 2 the guys & they'd get angry as hell @ that).

Let's not forget the statement he made in "Uptown" from the Dirty Mind LP (1980). He answered the female's question to whether he was straight or gay by stating, "No, are you?".

Okay, that means that you are, but still, his record shows that he's been consistent with females all along, but this may have been to keep us at bay.

If Prince was gay I don't think that he is anymore.

Jehovah Witnesses won't allow it.

Ummmm, sometime mid-to-late March, I think? Not very long ago. He performed "Musicology", and Mel was on to promote "Passion of the Christ".
