It must be me.....to these ears, Musicology is really poor.

Quite looking forward to this album.
Not a member of the fanclub, so not been able to access much of the new music. As a consequence NEWS was the last thing I heard...which I thought was qiute an amusing little thing, very entertaining and beautifully orchestrated, played, etc.

Musicology, by contrast, feels pedestrian, tired, appeasing and, well, boring.

Nice to see he's back to his old Ronnie Talk to Russia days with Mr Man and Cinnamon Girl (which is the second worst song on the album after Life O The Party....if that's the soundtrack, I'll pass thanks) - i.e. words with little thought.

There are some good tunes, ICP&C, What Do U Want.... and If I Was The Man In Ur Life excited me, but, beyond these three there is very little to please.

Reflection...well I guess he'll be sorry about this "comeback"....a very poor tune and a huge anticlimax.

Commercial? I don't know. I can't think of anyone who's going to buy into this other than those who buy into him regardless.....fools like me.

An all-time low. Lower even than NPS.....hurts me to say.

I think you should keep listening. I've been following P's career since the beginning and I have NEVER liked an album upon first listening. For me, it takes several listenings before I even begin to understand and appreciate what I'm hearing. Case in point: I liked ICPC at first, hate it now. I hated LOTP, love it now. I know that often it's just a matter of subjective tastes: most critics love the album, some didn't. Some fans love it, others don't.

But I think we all should keep listening before the verdict it in...

Must be....but at least When U Love Someboby, Madsex, Freaks on this side, Come On and Wasted Kisses made me want to play them again straight after I'd heard them. I bought musicology yesterday, took it straight home, played it. Put it away.

I am now on my second listen today and .... it's still plodding away.. Mr Man at the moment? Well, what can one say..... sadly nothing positive.

You know "Cinnamon Girl" may be a a grower. I didn't care for it or A Million Days at all on my first listen. But this past weekend I took a road trip and decided to give musicology a few spins. CG and A million Days are now standout tracks for me. They aren't groundbreaking or anything, but they are what they are. Straightforward Prince pop music, which ain't a bad thing. IMO.

Regardless, this is much better than NPS.

Just taken it off my CD player.....put on a little Foo Fighters. A band who can really play a Prince song.

Now, now....I'm just being provocative.

Sorry chaps, but I'm really disappointed with the new one. Hopefully it will grow on me.

No one going to bite on the Foo Fighters' quip? Pity.

Life O The Party makes me cringe and does remind of the worst songs on NPS - push it up and I like funky music etc. The music may pass if the song had some proper lyrics.

It's amazing how people can hear things so differently.
The moment I heard "Reflection" (live on Tavis), I thought it was absolutely beautiful.

Hmm, I just wanna know how you can still be 30 when your profile says that you were born 24 Dec 1971 hmmm

Add this to the fact that you don't like Musicology and... omg

OK, so I should update some stuff every now and again.....besides, I like 30. I'll use it as my stage age.

I know what you mean about it sounding poor but I kinda disagree. Everyone will have their own view about what Prince is doing now, where he has been musically and where he is aiming for...this is my view.

70's (For You, Prince) - Cute Interesting guy who was getting his foot in the door by fitting teh mould well.

Early 80's (Dirty Mind -> Parade) Fairly Unique and groundbreaking with a few exception and I this is obviously where people took notice and began to label him a genius.

Sign O the Time - Critically at teh top of his game, the best Prince in the critics eyes

Lovesexy -> Diamonds and Pearls - Prince began to coast and realised he could whoop ass without thinking.

After D&P up until now - with a few exception Prince has been like a panicing dog in water for teh first time - the music scene moved away from his comfort zone into a style/area that he could pull of successfully so he was left in teh wilderness a bit not able to compete with the music scene.

And heres where I think Musicology fits in....

Prince has obviously given up trying to fit the current music scene (soemthing Ims urprised he ever tried anyway) and musicology seems to be his U turn - if you can picture it!!! He's just coming back up to his game...realising that he needs the promotion, he needs HIS funk, he needs teh fans - Give him a few years and I guarantee he'll be back big time.

LOTP is almost embarassing for me.

I like the second half of the cd better than the first. When I first heard the cd I was pretty disapointed, but I kept listening and most songs have grown on me.

Burn the witch!

But how can one recognize a witch?

First, we take BoySimon to a listening booth and play the Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic album very loudly over and over again for a period of 7 hours.

If, at any point, he comments positively on any of the songs, then he is a witch and must burn.

If he remains silent, or makes any suggestion that some of the music may not be up to scratch, then...

He's a witch and he must burn!

But you see the number 7 is God's number, so I'm sure I would simply find redemption in the booth and then bother you with WatchTower.

Perhaps it should be an 8 hour session.

Proper lyrics....well, how about a pretty groovy song called Housequake. A proper tune to give life to a party without having to tell people that's what the intention is. Prince used to write songs that became the life of a party. He now needs to find a seriously bizarre gathering for this number.
