MUSICOLOGY booklet: Inconsistent and full of mistakes

Don't think this has been posted before:

  • The lyrics to the first 2 tracks are in that Musicology font, the others are in a 'normal' font.

  • The lyrics to "A Million Days" are totally screwed up, missing the entire first verse.

  • Although the word "I" is 'spelled' eye throughout the lyrics, the title of the song is "If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life" (even more ridiculous that just having the eye sign).

  • Spelling mistakes throughout, such as "U shouldn't of let me unzip ur dress".

Personally, I think this is very embarrassing, although I doubt many non-fans will notice. The beautiful pictures and not-so-boring background designs make up for it. Still, just checking it once before printing 100'000s of those things wouldn't have hurt.

I've been listening to the CD for 3 weeks now. That's why I have time to "analyze" the the booklet.

There's more mistakes than that....missing credits, lack of thank yous to essential personnel, missing studio credits, missing musician credits....just part of the myth, I guess!

Anxiety

I'm a writer and I've proofread for a living on and off for the better part of a decade. When I see stuff like this, it drives me nuts. It really doesn't take a lot of effort to put out something that's at least somewhat error-free - it just takes giving the job to someone who cares about the written word enough to make sure it goes out correct. shrug

hmm - I got the CD at the concert last week - was thinking of buying the released copy mainly to get the lyrics and credits. The copy from the concert says something like "Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by Prince except where noted", only it's not noted anywhere. Which tracks are all Prince and which were the band?

Anyone noticed that the On The Couch lyrics show a line more than the song actually has?
"I feel the blood racin' with the thought of you tastin' me
For that I be ur pardon"

(I don't have it here, maybe I'm paraprasing)

Too bad, it's a great lyric, IMO!

If all that matters is the music, why are you posting at a Prince forum? The postings within this forum, continually analyse every detail of Prince's art and life 24/7. More specifically, if you're not interested in the presentation of the album, why read this thread - let alone reply to it?

Very rude behaviour.

You know, it's really odd to me how people can assume that because they are how they are, that Prince, or any other musician, must conform to views on age (i.e. speak as if delivering a dissertation, write as if they were writing one, have no sense of humor or own identity).

I understand, and agree with, the beef about missing lyrics and credits, but come on. The speech/slang he uses? The Princebonics gets on my last nerve sometimes when I'm just trying to read rather than decipher, but damn. You can't expect someone to just resign to resembling your grandfather in his actions. If he did that, once again, the "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" feel starts to come around.

On the point of omitting musician's credits, who's to say he didn't actually play a sax (e.g. Dear Mr. Man)? That would be quite surprising, but not impossible. Remember, he plays over 20 instruments. lol Besides, he is known for doing that sort of thing in the past, why change his tune across the board now?

Those damn grammatical-but-not-Princebonics edits....

He does play a lot of instruments, but sax ain't one of them. The horn section is real, and it's who those guys mentioned. As for musician's credits, it is par for the course that he omits who he chooses, along with studios, engineers, etc.....there were more involved than listed.

I say it's totally sad for the man to put out this CD with the booklet being so unprofessional. Why not proof read the damn thing! Even more sad not to give people who participated credit...
I like the video on the CD though, that's a cool idea (he probably got it from that RAD live CD) lol

And the barcode on the packaging too. I mean really. It's embarrassing to have someone sit there for minutes waving the scanner against a bar code that isn't visible. If someone had just taken the time to enlarge it a few pixels then life wouldn't be so difficult. I feel your pain.

I don't mind the Princebonics. As annoying as I find them to be, they're kind of like the credit sequences to any given Woody Allen movie (the credits are always white type against black background, same font, w/ some old dusty 78rpm ragtime tune playing in the background) - no matter how different the project may be from anything else, you're still going to get some traditional trappings. I love when artists do that kind of thing, particularly when they tend to be freakishly prolific.

But when there's not a quality or consistency control on what's going out there, taking liberties with language can look silly and sloppy. It's one thing to be playful with language - it's another thing to be negligent.

Sure, it's all about the music, but if the written words to these songs weren't important, why include them in a lyrics sheet? I consider Prince to be not only a great musician, but also an excellent lyricist - I think it's only fair to expect his words to be presented in the best and most accurate light possible.

And proofing one's work ain't never dun kilt no won.
