Heat mag - Review of the week... The UK mag Heat (which is the Magazine Of The Year (has reviewed Musicology)
The main picture is the front cover with the liner note: Prince had perfected the catalogue pose. PRINCE Musicology (N.P.G.) IN A NUTSHELL: After years in the wilderness, gloriously eccentric pop genius Prince is back in fashion. Inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame; opening this year's Grammy's with a blistering Beyonce duet and clearly influential on the sassy grooves of modern acts such as OutKast. Can Musicology confirm his comeback? WHAT'S IT LIKE? His best album for years, Musicology has half a dozen classic Prince tracks. Life O' The Party is as minimally grimy as any modern R&B hit, but splattered with vivid brass lines and whooping Prince vocals. Meandering rock ballad Call My Name hits a perfect balance between passion and tender. Elsewhere, quality control slips and tracks like Million Days slide into pomp rock. HOW MANY GOOD TRACKS? Seven, out of 12. BEST TRACK: First single Musicology is old-time funk that's fabulously groovy. WORST TRACK: The Marrying Kind is an overcomplicated mess. VERDICT One for fans - if you haven't been converted by now, this won't change your mind. 3 Stars out of 5... DOM PHILLIPS . | |
