I think it was a clear reference to what MJ said in the interview (that he had a nose job so he could hit higher notes) without beeing a jab per se.
And while what he said at this interview could be interpreted both ways (backing off or explaining himself), the other interview where he called MJ "genius" and Janet "genius' sister" should make it clear he has great respect, because he could've easily said anyting else.

I think writing a lyric so arguably blatant then denying it is a smart publicity move. It sparks up the ol' MJ vs. Prince "media feud" (whatever that is), and it drums up a lil' controversy for the ol' Musicology album. Probably not an intentional move, but unintentionally clevah nonetheless.
