New Releases: Prince Offers Lessons In Musicology

Prince

In the past we haven’t always understood what Prince was on about in his songs. Why, for instance, did the girl in "Little Red Corvette" carry around used Trojans? Why is Tennessee the furthest, hottest place to drive the girl in "Alphabet Street?" And why does he think that girlfriends — as in best friends, not Sapphic buddies — wash each other’s hair, as he sings in "If I Was Your Girlfriend?"

In spite of not always understanding his references, most Chart editors still love the little purple guy, even if he has made a pretty misguided move in releasing an album, Musicology, that concentrates partially on 9/11. Now, we understand that just about every creative person felt the need to respond to that traumatic day, but most people did it a couple of years ago. Surely there’s been more in Prince’s life since then that’s worth discussing. Even if he’d chosen this topic, but avoided all the sappy ballads, it would’ve been OK. But he didn’t, so it’s not

1st of all, Prince said he was carrying the Trojans in "Little Red Corvette". 2nd, only 1 song mentions a war... IN 1 LINE!!! And 3rd, ... SAPPY BALLADS?!!!! Those ballads were great!

But on the other hand, them calling him "the little purple guy" is pretty funny! biggrin lol lol
