Wasn't Jesse trained scholarly, meaning he could read notes-DO YOUR HOMEWORK BRUTHA,JESSE JOHNSON WASNT PLAYING ON "GET IT UP" IT WAS PRINCE.
prince played almost every instrument on first time album(except keyboard solo by dr fink on get it up) jesse played on 777-9311 on second time album, all other instruments and guitars are by prince. he let time playing more on ice cream castles and pandemonium. I've always wondered who played that solo from 777-9311 and Get It Up. Thanks for the clarification. BTW, my vote is for Prince. I agree that from what I've heard, he's much more diverse.

Where did you get this information? Prince did all the writing and recording, Morris just came into the studio to lay his vocal tracks over Prince's. I seriously doubt that is Jesse playing that solo. Jesse is great, there's no denying that, but compared to Prince??? I don't think so. Lovesexy Funkateer

Never heard that term used for that maneuver before. Very slick. Who really cares who's better? As long as they play something you wish you'd played every so often. If you're a player isn't that one of the reasons you listen to them, or any other musician, in the 1st place? Are you saying that's hendrix on the isleys track? Hendrix did play with the isley brothers, but by the time they recorded That Lady hendrix had left, moved to england, made records, become famous and - not unimportantly - died. So that's Ernie Isley on that solo, sounding much more like Eddie Hazel than like Jimi btw.

I'll ask again: where did you get this information? You listen to anything by Jesse, especially "The Skillet," then go back and listen to "777-9311" and tell me that's the same guitar player. And again: I don't think so. Lovesexy Funkateer

coming from someone who obviously can't play guitar Yes I CAN play guitar, but this thread isn't about what I can do. I'm a big fan of Jesse as well but come on man, let's be factual here check da stats , Prince's axe abilities are respected by many rock guitarists out there ....includong Eric Clapton ( btw he knows how 2 play guitar). Yes Jesse last album was good, but he is nowhere as great a guitarist as Prince. And how often does the great Jesse make an album at all? Don't hold your breath for his next groundbreaking Metal-Funk new album 2 have fans lined up outside of Tower Records across America. Don't u want to come , 3121. It's gonna be so much fun, 3121. The only problem I have with this logic (and, again, I think Prince is a bad guitarist) is that Clapton (for all we know) wasn't asked to characterize Jesse Johnson. So, categorizing the absent of a Clapton/Johnson quote as proof of Prince's superiority is a bit of a leap.

It's not a matter of enlightening anyone. You have his latest album, which I think is a stellar example of his mastery of the instrument. I think he has a wonderful knack for handling different styles deftly, for smoothly incorporating the styles of folks such as Hendrix and King into his own. I think his solo albums always have shown off his considerable skill as a guitarist. And, yes, I think he's done a more consistent job of showcasing that mastery on studio releases than has Prince. The most common gripe among Prince fans on this site with regard to his guitar playing is that he rarely commits to tape the sheer genius of which he's capable in live settings. But, for Jesse, I can say, "So Missunderstood" and its multiple solos or "Bring Your Love Down Hard on Me" and its blistering blues runs, or the tonal and modal variations that make "Lovestruck" such a joy to hear. And, it's there. Or I can say, "Just Wanting You" and folks can hear again his take on Texas Blues a la Stevie Ray Vaughan. I think the main point about Jesse is that his approaches to playing and tone vary from song to song (a talent of Prince's, too). It's just that Jesse is MORE CONSISTENT when it comes to pairing the right tones for the right songs. Always has been. Even on "Affection" for Ta Mara & the Seen's first album. Just blistering solos and a tone and approach that stole the show. Jesse's a more lyrical soloist consistently. Yes, Prince can be at times, too. Just not as frequently. His "sexy solo" for Jungle Love, his sugar-sweet solo during "Stop, Look & Listen." I mean, gosh, one can go on. Jesse is a guitarist's guitarist (he puts me in the mind of Eric Johnson, for some reason). Prince is very good on guitar and knows how to ham it up with some showmanship to make his solos memorable. (Again, there, I point to the technical vs. visual significance of the RRHOF "...Weeps" solo.)

Well threadbare, your last post really sums it up for me. Jesse sure can play, but it's all by the book, guitar player magazine approved virtuoso guitar by numbers. With the SRV stuff, the Albert King licks, some modes... all exactly the way you're supposed to do it, right? And just like every other guitarist's guitarist he feels compelled to show that he's learned his lessons by having exactly the "right" (read: predictable) style and tone for each song. That stuff is just boring as hell and as a guitarist I'm appalled at how many talented guitarist conform to that shit. P is a greater guitarist exactly because he never comformed to those rules, he tears up the rulebook.
