Prince NOT upset by Ben Affleck's swearing

That story was a complete misinterpretation of something culled from the Entertainment Weekly article!

In the EW interview, it is the opposite, and an even more damning critique of Kevin Smith by Prince than that sensational headline gives him credit for.

In the EW interview, Prince says he and his band walked out of JERSEY GIRL because it was boring, which the article describes as "a so-so departure from" Kevin Smith's "usual lewd and crude comedies. Prince was unimpressed. Not that the 45-year-old, happily married, devout Jehovah's Witness can't appreciate a cleaner act; he himself has scrubbed from his set list staples like 'Head' and 'Jack U Off.' It's just that according to Prince, Smith didn;t replace it with anything interesting. 'We walked out after an hour,' he sniffs. 'Guess that's what happens when the potty mouth don;t work for you anymore.'"

That dumb Contact Music story (of which there is a thread about here on the forum) totally blew it, and it pisses me off. It is as if they didn;t bother to actually read it. Either that or they purposely skewed it, mentioning Ben Affleck, who DOESN'T EVEN SWEAR IN THE FILM!! We should all write them an have them correct that story and apologize.

crenshaw,

if Prnce wasnt bothered by the cursing in the film, why did he say this:

'We walked out after an hour,' he sniffs. 'Guess that's what happens when the potty mouth don;t work for you anymore.'"

It is a slam on Kevin Smith-- Prince is suggesting that without the swearing, Kevin Smith doesn't have anything else to stand on.

Read the paragraph carefully-- first of all, it sets up that there is no swearing in the new Kevin Smith film. The whole thing about Kevin Smith is that his films in the past have had a lot of swearing in them. The misinterpretation comes also from assuming that Prince is talking about himself with the line, "the potty mouth don;t work for you anymore." Prince was actually referring to Kevin Smith-- in other words, Smith took out the potty mouth, because it doesn't work for him anymore, but as the article says, Prince felt that Smith did not replace the potty mouth with anything interesting. It is all right there for you to read.

The headline would have been correct if it had read:

PRINCE BORED BY BEN AFFLECK'S NON-SWEARING

On the other thread, I've noticed that coachsean has summed it up beautifully-- this was his post:

"I'm not sure why the original poster paraphrased the story...maybe that's all they had access to and i'm also a little surprised that no one else has also read the story and commented on what was "actually" said.

That said i'm also going to paraphrase and leave it for others to quote verbatim from the article:

Prince walked out because the movie sucked. Not because of the cursing. It says how Jersey Girl was actually a more mainstream attempt by Kevin Smith and did not have as much cussing as his previous flicks. The reporter even states how that was no problem for Prince as he can appreciate someone cleaning up their act. But after an hour of a crappy movie Prince just felt it wasn't going to get any better and he left. His quote, "I guess that's what happens when the Potty mouth don't work for you anymore" was meant to say that apparently Kevin Smith can't be as funny without the curse words.

I read it once and somewhat quickly...if someone else post it and it reads differently i apologize but i'm pretty sure that the above is much closer to what happened then the judgemental hypocrite he's being exposed as by most of the previous post."

However, it was not the original poster's fault on the other thread-- the story that poster posted was from this link:

http://www.contactmusic.c...endocument

A totally misguided interpretation of the EW article.

When will Ben Affleck vanish into obscurity with the other folks that can't act? Anyone see Reindeer Games? If I didn't see it on DVD, I would have walked out.

I've seen Jersey Girl and really liked it. This is definitely a Kevin Smith movie and not a mainstream movie. I don't know why critics keep saying this. Most of this is backlash from the whole Beniffer thing which is a shame because the movie is really good. The trailer is also very misleading. Yes, there are cliches in this film but with Kevin's unique voice throughout. There is a lot of Kevin's crude humor but just not as hardcore as his other movies. Prince should have stuck around for another hour where the porno and masturbation talk happens. lol

Okay, I apologize-- I haven't seen the film. Apparently, Affleck does swear in the film. But the interpretation of the EW article is still way off. Prince does not purport in the interview to have been upset by any "cursing," and yet that is what the headline and story were about. Prince's comment was about the lack of cursing (which apparently there is a lot less of in the film, according to the EW writer), and about the film being unworthy of sticking through, not because it lacked the usual amount of cursing, but because (Prince felt) there was not much left of Kevin Smith's talent once you take away that crutch.

The implication, I guess, is that even though Prince used to curse, he feels he had the talent to back himself up.

It is telling that Prince would go see this movie-- as he himself is trying to change, perhaps he wanted to check out the work of another artist doing something less raunchy than in the past.

Cool, I get you. But I would say that anyone who thinks this film doesn't have that Kevin Smith stamp all over it is crazy. It has its raunch. It is rife with swearing and cursing. The only thing missing is Jay and Silent Bob.

The initial thread was started by me after checking out AskJeeves new search features, one of which allows you to search for news items related to celebrities. It was cut and paste into an org thread to start discussion, not to imply a complete and 100% accurate first person survey of the incident. It was pointing out a headline in Princedom, and opening discussion from there.

Ok, I'll be honest. Around 1995, Warner Bros hired me to initiate a smear capaign against Prince. Since then, we've been having monthly meetings in a treehouse in my backyard. But due to my full time schedule at Burger King, I haven't always been able to devote 100% of myself to their agenda. This week I had some free time, hence the post...

Wonder if Prince is still irked about the stuff Kevin Smith said in his documentary about being at Paisley Park? He even said that stuff when I saw him on tour....it's a testament to Prince's ability to forgive that he even went to see the movie =)
